Hello,

I have both atari 2600 and 7800. I want to have RGB output on them because mainly is easier for me to use them on a rgb switch with my other consoles and other reasons. It is possible? I can't find the necessary info for modify both consoles...

Best regards,

Impossible!

but you might fool people with a small PC inside crammed inside an Atari shell. That can output RGB.

btw, I'm not sure why you want to do this. If done properly a 2600 modified to output composite video looks pretty good. I don't think it would benifit much from RGB considering the primitive graphics. The 7800 on the other hand...video noise hell, at least on every model I've pried open.

I recall reading a write-up on the s-video mod for the 2600 and 7800 which stated somewhere therein that these consoles do not have chips suitable to out put RGB, don't ask me to dig those up though. I'd bet you would find it if you looked around though. Just go with s-video.

But they will have digital RGB, and that will can be converted to analog RGB using a DAC, no?

The 2600 and 7800 use a digital output, yes, but it's not suitable for easy conversion.  There are three luminance outputs, for a total of eight shades of grey, and a single chrominance output, which selects the hue.  It's kind of like S-video.

I bet it's possible if you build you own video board using a new chroma encoder and such.  definitely not worth it tho.  I just like to say nothings ever impossible =)
