I guess you downloaded the scans of Inside X68000 from japanese P2P, I have it me too.  :)

H68k

I'm sorry... but my Japanese is "minuscule" at best...

Surely there's some Japanese users that post on, and use this forum who wouldn't might lending a hand?

a24tanabe

I'm native Japanese and I have Inside X68000.
My English is not fluent ,but I will help you gladly.
This project will be heavy, but I will contribute gradually.

If I can help you, please tell me.

caius

Good, want to be our reference for japanese to english translation. Is that ok for you?

a24tanabe

OK.
I may not offer a perfect one,but do the best.

Where do I have to begin with?

lydux

It would be an incredible helpful project guys !
May I suggest to start with the video part (page 161) ? Seems very well explained in the book, and really obscure to everyone starting with x68000 programming.

caius

Great, thank you!
I can't really get why japanese called "Outside X68000" something that have to do with the inside of the machine!

I'm sorry if I can't understand correctly your English.

Author Mr.Kuwano wrote 3 books.
1) Inside X68000 : this book.
2) Outside X68000 : Arround expanding slot , assignment of all connectors , examples of peripherals, and circuit diagrams.
3) X68030 Inside/Out : Addition and difference of X68000 and X68030 , inside CRTC ,and so on.

caius

I was only joking about the name of the book "Outside X68000".Since it's about X68000 hardware and the hardware is the internals, it shoud have been called "Inside X68000"!  :)

a24tanabe

Where should I write translated document?

[Sample:p.161]

Screen Control

Screen Control mechanism , made by LSI developed originally by SHARP , is the most
characteristic part of X68000.
In this chapter, it is explained about several screen modes, screen control mechanisms.

1. Screen construction of X68000
X68000 has a very strong screen control mechanism that isn't seen in other personal computers.
Almost screen view required in business-use computers are characters, and very easy graph view,
so their hardwares have screens for characters (including kanji) and graphics in about 16 colors.
On the other hand, X68000 is designed for deeling with several requirement about "views" ,
such as real time action games , high definition with tens of thousands colors for example ray tracings,
window system with several character fonts, without overload of CPU.
Figure 1(p.162) shows screen construction of X68000.
X68000 has indivisual 4 types of screens:Graphic screen(1 to 4),text screen(4),sprite (128 max ,32 max
on same horizontal lines),BackGround screens (up to 2). And X68000 composes them and video screen
(super impose),then show in CRT. These screens have respective characters and make it possible to be
variegated expression by using properly for purposes or using combined.
Figure 2(p.163) shows constructions and charactars of each screen, graphic, text BG, and sprite screen.

Thank you for your generous assistance, a24tanabe.

Hi Guys.

A second approach would not be also viable, such as using OCR in the book in a first instance, and later feeding the generated text into a software to translate it to english?
I know quality is a concern, but if it is not possible to have some real translators doing this difficult job, it may be better to have a second option...
Also, after we have it in english, we will have plenty of good technical guys / engineers that will clearly see the errors in the translation and will be able to change it to make sense.

eidis

 Hi Costa !

Your proposal was the first thing which I tried before asking for help. The OCR, such as Abbyy FineReader does the job very good. Unfortunately the Japanese language is very complex and online translators most of the times give only a slight notion of what is said in the text. Sometimes the text needs to be translated by words or small fragments of sentences. Feeding whole page of text would spell disaster so we need people who have vivid imagination in figuring out riddles or someone who knows Japanese or is a native speaker.

This maybe a wild shot in the dark.. But would asking Luke Morse (on Youtube) if he'd like to lend a hand, be worth a go?

He's lived in Japan for some time and owned 4 different X68k models at the peak of his "collection" (sadly though, he's sold the rest of them on and now only has one)

Bare in mind though, he's recreantly moved house, so he's still somewhat busy getting settled in.

a24tanabe

I uploaded little translated text and figures. -> X68000/Uploads directory.
My English is so funky that I think this documents should be commonly owned  and rewritten freely.
Please anyone tell me the way to update x68000 wiki.

Thanks.

A24Tanabe San,

お疲れ様でした!

Fantastic work! Your translations are very good. I will prepare a good Wiki environment for you with examples and will post here a short tutorial on how to edit the Wiki.

Keep the scene alive !
Eidis

Update #1: Please open http://www.gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php and scroll down to the bottom of the page. Click on the "Login" button and enter your user name and password, which you use for the forum.

Select "X68000" section and then "Inside X68000". Open the page which you would like to edit, click on "Edit this page" and you will see its source code.

The source code of this page will show you how to use advanced formatting:
http://www.gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id=x68000:internet_on_x68000_using_ethernet_or_null_modem_cable

A few words of advice about using pictures. They can have high resolution and be downsized for preview. You can see how it is done in the source code of the previously mentioned article. The preferred format is PNG. Click on the pictogram of a painting, which is above the source code text, select a picture from the list or click on "Select files..." to upload a file.

Please feel free to ask any questions no matter how simple or complex they might be and thank you once again for your hard work and efforts.

Update #2: I found a very good page which is in Japanese and has detailed information on X68000 PSU repair. Hope this will help.

http://x68k.net/x68dengen/

Update #3: A24Tanabe San. I inserted your work in the wiki and thus made a formatting template for future translations. The diagrams are beautiful and the translation brought tears of joy to my eyes. This is a very special moment in the history of this forum and I think that most of us will truly appreciate your work only when our local Doujin scene will be born. The pictures were uploaded under the following names: screen_control_01.png and screen_control_02.png. Please forgive me if you wanted to do it yourself. Thank you once again for your generous contributions.

Hi, eidis.

I came back this operation finally over many my own works and my idleness.
I appreciate your help about making wiki documents.

x68dengen page is useful but obsolete. I will write renewal English version simultaneously.
Where should I write?

Thanks.

 A24Tanabe San,

Thank you once again for your generous work and efforts in translating the documents. Please open http://gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id=x68000:x68000 and scroll down to the bottom of the page. Click on the "Login" button and enter your user name and password, which you use for the forum.

The best place for x68dengen translation would probably be "Troubleshooting & Repair" section.

Preface

In 1987, the first X68000 was appeared with the theme of Gradius.
In Japan it was settled that PC-9801 was only a winner and all other makers made 80x86 and MS-DOS machine, then "personal" of personal computers was reduced to mean each operator in companys.
It was such a time.
When it was announced that Sharp would make 16bit version of the X1, they said "It would be 86 machine at any rate", " PC-9801 is enough at 16bit machine". Personal users were so disappointed  that such voice comes out.
But X68000 came out in front of such users changed images of former personal computers.
It had vertical slim design, 68000 CPU that personal users demanded, linear memory space with 1MB memory as default to max 12MB, graphics with 65536 colors, 768x512 bitmap text screen, sprites, FM sound generators, ADPCM, 5 inch FDD with auto eject mechanism, 3D scope, screen capture, track ball & mouse, HDD interface, and so on. I couldn't tell comments at such specs, and price under 400,000 JPY.
It was only natural that the word "personal workstation" was appeared by the idea that "personal computer" having potentials we can try something , express ideas and images on realtime WAS different from what is called "Pa-so-Co-nn" that aimed only for word processing, spread sheets, so when we needed except business uses, we must buy options.
Personal workstation ,plathome that replies personal ideas and inspirations, and expresses, realizes and connects to much more ideas.
For people which wants to well-use inside of X68000 that is new over 5 years, this book is good guide.

Inside X68000 - Preface (page 3)
http://gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id=x68000:preface&#preface

I tried translating it with translate.google.com, before asking for help, and it did not work out very well. If only I knew Japanese as good as you.

Can I post OCR processed text, which is too difficult for me, in this thread, just as it was done with page 3 of Inside X68000 ?

Thank you once again. These translations will make history in the X68000 scene.

 A24Tanabe San,

Thank you for you kindness and generous offer. I understand that you are very busy and am very grateful for your every translation. There is no need to rush things so please do it only when there is enough free time and strength. I will try to make your work easier by posting OCR processed texts here and translating the graphical figures. Please let me know if there is any other way I can help you with the translations.

I realize this is an ancient post but I'm new to the scene and have taken interest in developing for the X68000. I've recently acquired an X68030 system and spent some time trying to navigate the various information available on this site and others along with the Inside X68000 text. I made a small desktop only web based app to help translate this text.

I did a small write up about it here: Inside X68000 Interactive Translator

Basically it's a split screen utility that shows you the OCR'd japanese text on the left and an attempt at a translation at the right. It uses the keyboard arrow keys so it wont work on a phone. The link above explains how to use it but basically you just use the left/right arrow keys to navigate the doc and if you click on the right 1/2 of the screen it will copy the translated text into a pop-up window which you can copy/paste.

I hope someone finds it useful, it has helped me a lot so far.

Take Care,
Mike

Very useful, it's only a pity it misses a "goto page" input.. in a many hundreds pages book it's a bit stressing use the cursor's keys! ;)
