NES controller ports switched

Ok, so I bought a new NES game and didn't want to go home to play it so I played it at my fiance's house on hers.  I turn it on and the controller didn't work, so I put it in slot 2 and it worked just fine.  Turns out that the controller ports are backwards all of a sudden (It was never like that before)!  I tested a few games and a few controllers. I've never heard of this happening.  Before I take it apart and check every single component on the board with my DMM, I was wondering if anyone had any input.

That's mighty bizarre.  I'd be stunned if it didn't turn out to be someone opening it and swapping two connectors (that said I forget how a NES works inside, dunno if that's even possible).

it's extremely easy to switch them inside the nes, theres a set of cables coming from each port which plugs into the motherboard, theyre both identical, with identical connectors. the fist time i took a nes apart i accidently plugged them back the wrong way around, so i know how easy it is to accidently swap the ports around.

i think someone opened the nes while you werent watching:P

Oooooh yeah, it's been awhile since I opened up a regular NES, (I have a toploader) I forgot the ports have a connector, guess I would have remembered that if I had taken the time to open it up.    Thanks.

Maybe the gremlins switched them.
