You had some downtime last night lawrence, it happens though.

I'm surprised to hear that, there was no sign of it on my end...

The machine the site runs on is sitting next to me, and it's purring like a kitten.  If there's downtime it's somewhere other than here.  I blame NTT.  =)

Oh i didnt know that. Hmm either your internet connection or possibly (but rarely) a broken connection somewhere in between the two of us.

How come you have gamesx hosted by some stupid company if you have a server set up?

Because I don't trust my own system to be very reliable...  Odd considering my uptime's been WAY better than theirs.

The outage you noticed may have been a result of the typhoon that ravaged Japan that night, so windy I couldn't sleep for the noise, and I'm nowhere near the actual storm!!

Woah, yeah that might do it. We dont get news for you guys over there, but over here florida is being ripped to shreds by multiple "hurricanes."

Im having so many problems with my webhosting. My friend was hosting me on his site, bla bla bla, he didnt pay the bill, were suspended bla bla bla. So I would like to host myself (wanted to in the first place) but my ISP blocks incoming connections on port 80. Even if they didnt, the mobo for my server has mysteriously dissapeared...

Yeah... freehosting sucks too... but i dont think that needs an explanation.

My webhosting came with my ISP, I have to admit, it's very good, I've only ever experienced about 2 hours of downtime with it... the only thing that sucks about it is the URL :(

Paid webhosting is dirt cheap, $20 per month is the norm, with lots of space and lots of traffic.  Back when I started GameSX in 1996 the rates were a lot higher - 5MB space for $50 per month!!

Five meg was a lot back then, and even now the entire GameSX site fits in under 20MB.  Largely as a result, no doubt, of the shitty camera I had that makes postage-stamp pictures.

And here's me sitting running a site that chews up over a hundred GByte/month of bandwidth. Ok, the system is a dedicated system so I have full root access to it, and a couple of 80GB SCSI drives. Having SCSI doesn't half make a difference when you're dumping MySQL databases for a backup! (The forum database I'm backing up is about a gig in size. I'm seeking ways to make it smaller, as it's a fairly hefty load on the system)

Anyone here a MySQL guru?

I fear MySQL.  After XP's drive caching fucked the database for these forums up the third time I learned the proper fear for all things SQL.

What site do you run that purports to be more popular than mine!?  Even on a good month I only do ~40GB of traffic, not counting the FTP full of pr0n n r0mz.  ;)

The main site can be found at  http://www.aoaforums.com

I've not had many problems with MySQL on unix, which is what the main host is running at the moment. Don't EVER let the drive with the MySQL databases on run out of space however. If you do, it will trash tables quite happily before grinding to a halt.

On a good month, we manage about 200GB of traffic. On a quiet month, it may be only 80GB of traffic.

Lemme know if you want to cut a deal hosting GamesX on a site based in Texas. ;)

THOSE BASTARDS. THIS IS BULLSHIT. AND I DONT EVEN SWEAR.
This is what my website says:

I am sorry, you must have reached our servers in error.

Please send us an email to support@frandt.com if you think this is in error.

Sounds like they've yanked your virtual hosting, but not terminated the DNS entries.

I presume you've cancelled your account with them?

It looks to me that Lawrence has this whole hosting thing down.

I also like using Abyss (because Apache = TEH SUK OMFG!), but my spare PC crashes if I so much as look at it the wrong way. Oh, well. <_<

atom

Yeah, ive used abyss myself, it is an excellent server. My isp blocks port 80 though :(
