Server Failure - the simple story

As some of you noticed, the server was down.  Normally I've got IT staff on site to sort it out for me, but for a number of reasons the normal communications were unavailable, and so it took a while to find someone and ask them nicely to plz halp.

And halp they did.

The problem was the router.  For reasons unknown it basically freaked out so hard it couldn't freak back in again.  Restarting it brought the system back online.  The little server this site (and a dozen others) runs on is a beast, it'll outlive us all.  It hummed away happily while the router was down, no files or data lost.

It did expose a couple of flaws in my backup regimen though, so that was good.  A relatively painless way to learn that things weren't being backed up as I thought they were.  I've fixed that now.  =)

Here's to another five years uninterrupted uptime.  =D
