The plastic ring on the the bizarre SNES power chord hook up is busted, and the only thing left is two metal prongs. I want to replace this with an AC connector from some old computer speakers that would fit an NES plug. I really don't know why Nintendo switched to the new connector on the SNES, as its non-standard, apparently fragile, and has the same ratings as the NES adapter. I'm guess some marketing jerk wanted it to be proprietary, The only problem is the AC connector for the speakers has three contacts, and the connector for the NES has 2. The third looks like its there for volume control. It could be for grounding.  Could I just soldier the 2 positive pins together into the board, or is this some noob notion that will fubar the whole thing? Can I bipass the third prong altogether. Sorry that I'm such a novice at all this.

Are you in the States? I ask because in North America, the NES and SNES have completely different specs for their AC adapters. The SNES unit puts out 10 volts DC, whereas the NES adapter puts out 9 volts AC. That differs from other regions.

There's a Radio Shack part that you can still get in some parts of the country with a removable tip. That way you can replace it if the connectors break. You might also be able to source the tip separately and wire up a connector for it. The part number for the full AC adapter is 273-1614. Here's a reference of all of them if you're interested:
