In the schematic on GameSX, is the IC really needed?

I guess it's for compatibility with certain monitors. I'm using a simple cable without a chip. It works with my 17" Sony CPD-G200 but not with my old no-name 15" monitor.

The buffer chip, unless I'm mistaken, basically ups the max current of the signal.  In the event your monitor needs more 'oomph' the buffer chip feeds it without having the DC's video chip suffer the extra drain.

Whether it's necessary or bad in the long term to not use it I dunno, but it's a thirty cent part.  Use it, I say.

My suspicion is that the DC internally uses 3.3V logic, hence the sync outputs are at 3.3V. Buffering them with 5V logic brings them up to standard TTL levels, which some monitors may require.
