Bought a shiny new Infocus X1 DLP projector not too long ago, and while its output is not too far from perfect, the inputs are another matter. Being American-made, it happens to lack SCART inputs entirely. All I've got is VGA, S-video and composite sockets, and being in PAL lands I can't get S-video out of half my consoles even with the right cables.

The projector's spec sheet says it won't go below a Hsync frequency of 31.5kHz, but it seems to be perfectly friendly with the composite signals my consoles put out. So will the VGA port be similarly easy-going about the form its input takes? Furthermore, will I need to buy (or wire) a sync separator for this setup?

...Or do I have on my hands a less-happy scenario, where my haphazard guesses are all completely shot and I should just be saving money for a scan converter?

It's very possibly the VGA port will accept 15kHz RGB.  The system obviously supports this rate through other ports, it would be a criminal act to make the VGA port only 31kHz, IMO.  Try it and see.

You should be able to tie the composite sync to both the H and V sync inputs without a problem.  It's what I usually do, tho I've heard some monitors demand proper seperated sync via an LM1881.

Damn the luck. I found a cheap sync separator on clearance but as it turns out the spec sheet is perfectly accurate - the VGA port just won't sync to a 15Khz signal, even if every other input is happy to.
Guess I'll chalk it up to experience and be thankful for a forgiving returns policy.

Now to figure out how to get a PS2 to output VGA...
