"Unchecked" RAM board on Yahoo -- worth the risk?

Hey again, folks.

Lately I've been snooping around Yahoo Auctions, and I came across a 4MB I/O RAM board for sale. However, I'm not sure if buying it would be a smart decision, since the description tells that the item's behavior is unchecked.

Is the degree of failure high within these boards? I'm sure no one would want to spend a lot of cash on a dud board - so this kind of dilemma poses quite a bit of a threat.

Conversely, if anyone here has an extra RAM board they want to get rid of, give me a shout and I'll likely buy it off you, since my X68k only has 2 MB. I'm not crossing my fingers for anything though.

RAM boards are usually quite solid.  Anything like this will be sold as untested on yahoo, it's just the way it works there.

Pretty much everything I buy off yahoo JP is listed as ジャンク or "Junk"  With systems it usually means the power supply is dead, but Ive not had any ram board or similar show up not working.  Like Super said, theyre pretty reliable.

Buying untested hardware is the standard modus operandi on Yahoo auctions.

Egh, looks like Yahoo Auctions is still infested with people using auto-bidders. That sucks.

If it was an autobid then it was likely a proxy bid.

What's the ram standard for the x68K? I've got here plenty of old PC SIMM modules....

X68000s use proprietery boards for ram.  There are some add on boards that can utilize 30 or 72 pin simm chips but they are rare and expensive.

If you have the parts, you can make your own.  I've seen a lot of homemade RAM boards for the system.  Most are extremely ghetto, but do actually work.

Now I'm intrigued by the "building your own RAM" concept. How difficult is it to find necessary parts and to get the thing working altogether?
