i just got a turbo express today, and i get nice illuminated blackness from the display. i also dont think the dc input works, but i havnt tried it yet.
anyone got any info on these?

The DC input is very flaky, they tend to get oxidized and/or break off internally, requiring re-soldering.  That's the easy part.  I'd feed it another signal and see what you get - go buy a TV tuner.  =D
