Laptop screen as a standalone monitor?

Since the people here are so inclined about similar subjects, I was wondering if anyone here has ever tried to use a laptop screen as a standalone monitor? �If you did, what all was involved? �Something tells me this would either be extremely easy or extremely complex.


If so did anyone try it with any consoles (probably just HD ones)? �I think the dpi of a 1900X1200 17" screen would look fantastic for gaming, at least for still shots. �Also it might could be used for a projector!

To use most laptop screens, you need a digital encoder to process composite or RGB video. Bought singly, that chip will cost you about $300 or more. Unless already have a spare encoder chip, or you plan on recycling several thousand LCD panels in this way, it's always more cost-effective for you to buy a dedicated unit that's already got an encoder in it.
