Neo Geo Pocket Joystick Questions

Since I lack the gumption to open one of mine up (and I think I recall seeing a tutorial forever ago about cleaning out the joystick) I figured I'd just ask.

Mainly I want to know how it works. Is it a solid unit? Could I say move it easily to another project or is it 4 microswitches?

Any help would be appreciated.

This is for the Neo CD pad, but the internals are more or less the same.  The NGP pads don't wear out as often as the neo CD pads do.
