Midi advice.

Hi,

I can get a SC-55 and/or MT-100 (MT-32 compatible sequencer) for a good price.
(I'm a geek on a budget, and that is hard life )

Is it worth putting lot more money into top modules like SC-88 or CM-64?

Do a lot of games support CM-32L or SC-88?

For purposes of the x68000 or even DOS gaming you really dont need the SC-88.   A CM-64 however would be awesome to have alongside the sc-55.  The CM-64 is fully an MT-32 and thus can accept custom programming etc that some DOS games use.  Not sure if any x68000 games program the module or not.  Either way having both the CM-64 and SC-55 is the best midi setup you can ask for.

A few games utilize general midi and sound better with more modern GM modules.  Super Deadite can comment better on sich devices.

I have seen some videos where they were using the SC-88 and the games sounded awesome, unfortunately that's the best I can offer as I am still shopping for a midi setup myself.

I have a CM-64 and a SC55 mkII and honestly I use the 64 more than anything right now since I don't have a mixer. some konami games have GS/GM tracks that are pretty nice but overall the CM-64 I like. Its a personal preference.

Ordered a SC-55 first gen for now around 40$. Hope it's a good deal.
Glad i didn't notice midi sound back then. Any expander would have cost an arm
Bet it was 20 times this price.

CM-64 is the next target but later. I haven't seen much for sale or at auction sites so i bet it's way more expensive. And my retro geek budget is done

Detana!! TwinBee has some of the most amazing midi (and game music in general) I've ever heard with a CM-64. Definitely try that game once you get that module. Can't go wrong with a SC-55 though, they are great for many games. Hopefully you have a mixer ready

The vanilla SC-55 is not a bad starter midi unit.  It has inputs on the back that will lwt you mix the system output with the midi output without a mixer.  Nice and simple setup.  Games like Dracula use the module for music and the internal soubd for effects so it works great for those games.  Once you get multiple modules youll need a mixer board of some sort.
