X68k to Genesis adapter

does anyone have a straight forward explanation on how to wire up for both a 3 button and 6 button genesis adapter. I have been trying all the different guides here for several days and cannot get a single one to work. The best I have gotten so far was the guide using the 7404 chip to auto switch between 3 and 6 button. What I have gotten is all four directions but know button responses.

Any help at this point would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to get this stuff to work as I am presenting at a gaming show on the 21st

did you end up using the single throw or double throw switch?

If I remember well, I used a double-pole double-throw switch.
