I have tested several joysticks (Atari, Genesis, Amiga, etc) and I can't seem to find one that works with games that have 2 button functionality (image fight, xevious, flying shark, etc). For games where you can configure keys these work fine but these are very few. Even worse, in some games like Flying Shark if you use the joystick to move around the plane the fire button doesn't work very well.

Am I missing something?

Use Joystick for MSX. Works fine.

Or....

Changing some pin of Genesis 3 button pad will brings you what you want.

That is....

9 pin D-SUB female connector
at the controller

Genesis         X68k

1. UP          ----->   1. UP
2. DOWN     ----->   2.DOWN
3. LEFT      ----->   3. LEFT
4. RIGHT     ----->   4. RIGHT
5. +5V         ----->   5. +5V
6. A ,B        ----->   6. A
7. SEL        ---X      9.NC
8. GND       ----->    8.GND
9. C,START ----->   7.B

Remove No. 7 line from the PCB of Genesis pad(Select button line. No use)
Detach Pin number 9 line from the PCB pad and attach it to number 7 land.
If you don't want ironing or something,  just cut the line at the middle and bind it to other line :-D

Button B work like X68K's button A, button C will be button B

If you want swap A,B..., you maybe know the answer.

This comparison page on the wiki details the differences between different types of sticks.

Basically, all the sticks you tried need pins 8 + 9 reversed.

Thank you both for the info.

What is your take on Micomsoft's XE-1 ST2? Is it worth it? I can see a few in eBay but it's a bit expensive for me

NFG

Most of the micomsoft sticks of that era are solid and dependable, but I wouldn't pay more than about $30 for them.  Better off rewiring any cheap stick you can find locally.
