Gamecube Disk Damage

Anybody happen to know where the data layer in a Gamecube disk is? I ask because one of my recent purchases had some really scratched up disk art, to the point that you could trace some of the missing foil all the way from spindle to edge. But the game plays just fine. I suspect that the label is not also the data layer like a CD, because when held up to the light there's no transparent spots on the disk. Any insight is appreciated.

It's a normal DVD with custom "Burst cutting area" encoded,  some special laser readable barcode on the center and the contents are disc-level encrypted.  Basically made in a way the only drive that can read them is the gamecube one.

Since it's built like  a plain old DVD, the data layer is exactly in the middle of the plastic sandwich.
