Hello,
Before the new forum there was a guy that succesfully modded a Pal N64 with the RGB mod.
And he did says that it depends on the serial behind the N64 like "NUS-001" but i don't remember wich one is needed for the mod ?
If somone remember it, it should be good to update the N64 RGB mod page with those informations.

Dr.Wily

Yes it's me. But this mod is only possible with only certain n64 motherboard.

This mb have all wire for RGB output, but no chips to carry the video signal. Most PAL N64 system have a DENC DAC chip. But few model have a RGB DAC chip. Only this models can be mod for RGB video out.

Thank you Dr.Wily,
Can you tell me what is the serial on the back of your N64 ?

Merci Dr.Wily,
Peut tu me dire quel est le numero de serie derriere ta N64 ?

Charly

Dr.Wily

Yes serial is : 12088222

But SN is not representative. Some non RGB model (composite) have a more older SN than RGB N64 model. Moreover, PAL composite N64 appear most recent whereas thier SN is former than N64 RGB.

Strange...

Thank you,
but i meant the serial after the "NUS-???" on the label near the right side on the back of the N64.
It seems that it's only the very first model "NUS-000(EUR)" that can be modded for the rgb mod, in fact i wanted to know wich model do i need to search for the rgb mod ; is it model NUS-000, NUS-002, NUS-003 etc... ?

Charly

Dr.Wily

Ah ok ! Sorry. This is NUS-001.

I must find a composite N64 (DENC chip) for look which model is.

it seems to to me that the composite models are older than RGB models. But in US it is the opposite.

The only way to recognize a RGB N64 is to open it.

If dj898 post his pics I tel you if his N64 is a RVB N64. Dj898 you must open it for this

ok...
while waiting for mine to arrived which could take some time - depends how early my cousin can ship it to me :( - I'd like ask how I am going to open the bugger? I believe Nintendo uses special screw for all its consoles and carts?

I have couple of those BITS or what ever it's called...
will they do or do I need special tool of somthin to open this one when it's here?

Dr.Wily

Humm... To open it you can use a ball point pen. In France this is the brand "BIC". You remove ink tank and, with a lighter, you heatings the plastic body of the pen.

Ok, here is a picture of my N64-Mainboard.

Is it able to be modded with RGB or not?

Thank you!

Aidan

Not possible to tell from that picture as far as I'm aware.
However next to the top most chip with a metal lump on it is a smallish chip, marked above by "U4". That is the chip that does the encoding. Perhaps you could provide details of the part number?
[ Not an authoritive source of information. ]

Tweek

On the chip is a code which says:

DENC-NUS
RS5C282
7KM 88

Cyber Axe

my n64 mobo looks exactly like that and i applied the rgb mod but it doenst work the tv says its in rgb mode but thers just a black screen

My US version N64 doesn't have the U4 chip. In fact, there is no chip labeled U4 anywhere on my motherboard, neither is there a chip that is 12 pins on each side. If your motherboard fits my description, it is likely RGB un-moddable. :(

The Model No. to my above-mentioned N64 is NUS-001(USA).

phreak97

the NUS-### model number is nothing to do with anything, it's the same with every nintendo unit, NUS means Nintendo Ultra Sixty-four which was the dev name for the n64, and the number is the piece of hardware, NUS-001 is the console, NUS-002 is the power supply, NUS-005 is the controller.. etc etc. theres something for each number up till when nintendo stopped making new peripherals for it. if you google it, theres a site dedicated to that kind of thing, it has almost all of them, with only a few unknowns.

the same applys with all the nintendo consoles, HVC-001, NES-001, SNS-001, DOL-001, DMG-001, MGB-001, CGB-001, AGB-001, AGS-001, NTR-001  plus a few more i dont own or know. when a console is released with a new design, as was famicom/nes, (toploader) it gains a 1 at the front of the number, the famicom top loader has a model number of HVC-101.

in the end, what i mean is, youre gonna have to open your 64 to find out if itll work, which it looks like you've done already.

The N64 motherboard on this picture is not a good choice for RGB mod.

This model is does not support RGB out through DAC. Only a modchip connect directly to the PPU can output RGB.

Hi, I'm French and I found some things about that mod.
After some researchs, all the N64 selleds in Freance are not good for the mod.
The firsts got a serial witch finish by (FRA), and after, it finish by (EUR).
All the (EUR) that I opended can't be mod, but for the only (FRA) one that I found (they are rare, if you live in France too...), the mod perfectly worked !!!

is there a pcae to get the special screw driver instead?

dj898

cheers for that mate.
I was looking for the place in Down Under but few places I checked ask fair bit of money for it... If I get from overseas the shipping will be ended up more than the bits itself.. :(

Oh well...

NFG

You can mail a pair of screwdrivers around the world for less than twelve bucks, bits for less than five.  They're not heavy.

dj898

I shall find out how much play-asia wants for shipping...
either that or raid mate's place coz I know he has those bits - he showed them to me last year and I completely forgot 'bout till now
that mongrel owe me for few games he lost(?) so shouldn't be a big deal to burrow for good... :P

well this will have to wait since I'm playing my 64DD setup... :P
I'm still trying to come up some nice track for F-Zero X but I suck at this kind... :(

And don't know about others I think 64DD SimCity64 is nice...

NFG

I made some wicked Fzero Expansion tracks, very much like Wipeout, with crazy drops and mad vertical corners. I made a drop that would wipe out 100% of the computer players on one corner - a steep rise covered in boost pads, and then a sharp right-hand turn in mid-air, so you had to turn without seeing the track.  Computer players just sailed straight off into the city.  =)

dj898

OT: Does that mean the AI of F-Zero X bit rough then?  :D

Shadow_Zero

Just to verify (in addition to http://nfggames.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=37), every NUS-001(FRA) can be RGB modded the same way as the first gen. US and JAP machines?

Before the various online stores started selling them I bought a gamebit from a local supplier (in Melbourne).  I don't remember the name of the place, it was the one that automatically delivered to the place I was working for at the time.  They couldn't get the smaller size for opening cartridges, the larger size was $28 (luckily it must have went unnoticed on the company account, as I was never asked for the cash even though the boss knew I was ordering it for myself and ok'd it).

It's cheaper to order them online especially if you're ordering other stuff at the same time as the bits are so small they don't usually add any extra shipping.

Shadow_Zero

I need to re-check, but I had the idea my N64 had philips screws, not Nintendo/Gamebit screws.
I got my Gamebit from therage.com for $5.99, but they seem to be non-existent now.

viletim!

ido8bit,

You know they used to sell the gamebits at Jaycar, they even sold the screws to go with it! That was a fair while ago though.
