I know it is possible to output to a VGA computer monitor on some game consoles, but would it be possible to do this on a Playstation? I have a 20inch monitor and I'd like to use it for better resolution when gaming. BTW, my ps1 is an older SCPH-5501 model if that makes a difference.

The PS is not capable of 640x480 non-interlaced video, so no.

Lawrence is right. The PlayStation 1 is not capable of doing 480p Progressive Scan video.

The PlayStation 2 is capable of doing Progressive Scan for certain games and movies but not for PlayStation 1 games.

It is unknown at this time if the soon to be released PlayStation 3 will have the capability of playing everything, including PlayStation 1 games, in Progressive Scan mode.

And considering established precedent, it doesn't seem likely Sony will add these features for the sake of compatibility.

It can't do 640x480?  I have done some research and I've found that it is capable of that resolution.

coppied from wikipedia PlayStation article:

Graphics Processing Unit

This chip is separate to the CPU and handles all the 2D Graphics processing, which includes the transformed 3D polygons.

Features:

   * Maximum of 16.7 Million Colours
   * Resolutions from 256224 to 640480
   * Adjustable frame buffer
   * Unlimited Colour Lookup Tables
   * Maximum of 4000 88 pixel sprites with individual scaling and rotation
   * Emulation of simultaneous backgrounds (for parallax scrolling)
   * Flat or Gouraud shading, and texture mapping

When you say it is not capable, do you mean that games don't use that resolution mode, or am I just missing something?

I said it can't do 640x480 non-interlaced.  The figure you quote is interlaced.
