So I bought the new Metroid Prime bundle the other day, because the Gamecube my friend and I had been sharing was fried.  I've been working and going to school, and hadnt had a chance to look at it until just this afternoon, when I decided to plug it in and go to town.  I converted the Component cable to VGA using the directions on this board a while ago, so I was all set to take Zelda out for a spin on my monitor, when I found that my new GC only has an analog A/V port.  WTF?  Anyone know about this new (I assume it's new, havent heard anyone else mention it before) version of the GC?  I'm kind of confused.  I might have to open it up soon and see if there's still a way to output digital, or if it's a redesined board.  Grr, aggrievation.

Yeah, I heard a long time ago they were going to be removing this port.  Coincidentally I saw my very first one like this only yesterday.  Dunno what's inside, but it's sure unfortunate it was removed.  Nintendo has a habit of this - the SNES2 had no RGB or S-video, and of course the N64 never had RGB...

I suppose my best bet is to trade in for a used console from a game store.  I think I rank the removal of better video output up there with the creation of the PowerGlove... Damn you, Nintendo, stop mocking us consumers.  I'll pry the beast open and let you know what it looks like in there.

BTW: It is still possible to modified the newer Gamecube with a us/jp region switch ?

Call nintendo and tell them you want one with a progressive output. When nintendo announced that they were removing it from the newer models they said that you could call them and get an exchange for one of the older models.

Nintendo GameCube Component Video Questions

The Digital A/V Output port was removed from systems produced after May, 2004 (these systems will have a model number of DOL-101). If you have a Nintendo GameCube without this port, and you wish to play your games in progressive scan, please call our Consumer Service department at 1-800-255-3700, to discuss available options.

Additional Information:

   *

Why have you removed the component video feature from the Nintendo GameCube?
On newer models of the Nintendo GameCube, we opted to remove the digital A/V out port from the system because we found that less than one percent of all Nintendo GameCube players used this feature.

   *

Will future Nintendo GameCube games continue to have the progressive scan feature?
About one-third of licensee-published titles and over 90% of Nintendo-published titles currently have the progressive scan feature. We expect that most Nintendo-published titles will continue to support progressive scan. Each licensee will continue to make the decision of whether or not to include this feature in their future games.

The Australia model of the N64 did have RGB via the SCART cable.

The PAL N64 had a SCART cable too, but it carried only composite video (Or S-video), not RGB.  I'd suspect the Australian one is the same, Nintendo doesn't love Australia enough to give them special goodies.

well, they care enough to differentiate their stuff from its euro counterparts (n64 box arts resembled US rather than euro, "this whatever is for sale and use in Australia and New Zealand only" and other easy things)... but theres no RGB from a stock AUS n64 system, i've tried but no luck
