Well, I kinda screwed up using a third party cartridge in my laseractive and well, it died and smellt bad, does anyone have some kind of documentation for it?

Start taking it apart and look for the broken bit.  It's already dead, right?  What else could go wrong?

Hint: unplug it first.

Don't have the slightest clue of what it could be, the cd and ld buttons on the front where lit, but the unit was otherwise quite dead when I unplugged it back then.
I've started dissasebling it (cleaning it throughly as I go as it's never been done before) but theres alot of cables and suports to go before I'm there I'm afraid.

I've been fooling around with it a bit now and the laser is dead, that much I now know. Seems to be more faults with it though as I can't even eject the tray after unplugging the laser or get any expansion pack to work. Sigh... seems I must write it off as dead. :(

If it smelt bad, that generally indicates that a component has died somewhere due to overheating. Generally capacitors don't die that way, so you can probably rule them out. Things like resistors and semiconductors definately do die that way, so look for scorch marks or other defects.

The first thing to check is always the power supply. Failure of the PSU to generate and regulate the correct voltages will result in the system not working properly.

Yeah, but I don't really know what voltages it should output, and then you need a load on it in order to get a good reading off it. Not sure where I could get a laser for it so I've pretty much given up on it now. At least they're not that expensive.
