Title: PAL SNES modding confusion
Post by: Ben on August 05, 2004, 02:06:15 PM
Sorry for asking what may be a really obvious question, but I'm confused by the guides to modding a SNES in order to play Japanese and American games.

Show here (http://www.gamesx.com/importmod/snescon.htm) is the guide to modding the cartridge slot in order to fit Japanese games into an American SNES. Seeing as the PAL cartridge slot is a different shape to the American one, is it necessary to do anything differently, or is the general procedure the same?

Somewhat similarly, this (http://www.gamesx.com/importmod/sneslockout.htm) guide to disabling the SNES lockout chip refers to playing PAL games on NTSC hardware but not the reverse. Is the same mod necessary to enable my PAL SNES to play foreign games?

Thanks a lot for any help :).

Super Famicom and PAL snes carts are have thesame physique, so if you performed the mod on a USA snes, both carts will fit. This also means that a JAP cart wil fit in a PAL snes withouth modding, and a USA cart will not fit at all, unless you FUBAR the snes. Use a converter to play USA games on a PAL snes in this case.

Regarding the lockout chip, yes, you do need to disable it in order to play USA/JAP games on a PAL snes (if the carts have a protection that uses the lockout chip).

Thanks for the information :)

However, I'll most likely be modding a PAL SNES, and I'll definitely want to play US games on it, so I still need to know if there's any major difference between the cartridge slots on a US and PAL model that'll stop me from using the same basic method :P

As you'll see, the PAL system is very different than the US/JP units, which differ only in the cart slot shape.

There's the 50/60Hz issue to consider, the lockout chip issue, the controller issue...  All these mods need to be performed, all the details are on gamesx.com.

Does anyone know of a guide to FUBAR a PAL SNES/SFC in order to fit US SNES carts?

On another note, can the (PAL) SNES converters be used on US SNES/SFC as well?

It should be something like this. Get an NTSC cart to test fit.

Well, two things. First, what tools to use to cut this practically? And secondly, the cart entree isn't the only part that has to be widened, because internal cartridge holder also isn't wide enough to fit US carts in. And that's really butchering if you want to make it fit!

For the top cover i personally used a hand file. It takes time, but that way i can get a clean "cut". For the "internal cartridge holder" you only need to shape the outer left and right side. So a dremmel or a handsaw and a hand file.
