Title: Question on XVI on Yahoo JP Auctions
Post by: dasfool on April 16, 2018, 05:17:33 AM
Is this XVI missing a chip or is that spot meant to be empty? There are more images in the description.

Are you the guy that asked the same question on ebay?

If not then the slot being empty is normal. That space is for inserting expansion boards.

I'm not there same guy. Thanks for the info! It's getting tougher to get a X68000. I know it will need repair, i just want one with all the parts at least.

Just to be sure, the socket I'm concerned about is labeled IC22 MC68HC000-16 in this image from the auction description:

In this mainboard image, it says the X68000 CPU is supposed to be there:

Am I wrong?

It does look missing, it does have an FPU though!

Motorola X68000 CPU's are not hard or expensive to acquire. There are plenty on eBay, and they are drop in replacements for the one missing on the mainboard. I would make sure it is the CPU, and not the CPU controller that is missing first though. They both look similar and have the same number of legs, but the part number is different. The images are too low res to read the part number though.

In any case, the machine won't do nothing with either missing.

It looks like there is only one socketed chip of that size on the XVI motherboard. Going by the fact that the XVI can accept an Xellerator board, I think it would have to be the CPU. The other chip of the same size should be the HD63450 DMA controller but it's soldered directly to the board. Would a CPU like this act as a good replacement (I figure it should be capable of 16mhz for the XVI)?
