Title: N64 Stick Converter PCB v2.2

I've made a new version of the PCB for improving that Gamecube-style N64 replacement stick in various ways.

The new PCB got some nice new features like:
- descriptive labels on top and bottom side
- easy re-enabling of calibration mode by setting a jumper
- additional holes to fit larger joysticks found in PSX and Xbox controller
- also suited for slider joysticks -> accurate calculation of the required dead zone
- additional solder jumpers on bottom side to invert X- and/or Y-axis


The PCB comes with a new analog joystick as well as a pin header and a jumper.
The price is 10 € per PCB; worldwide flat rate shipping is 3.50 €.  (That means 1 PCB: 13.50€ shipped; 2 PCB's: 23.50€ shipped, etc...)

You should be familiar with programming microcontrollers if you want to use the source and hex files. Please don't ask me how you gonna operate your programmer - I don't know it. There are already tons of programming guides and manuals available!

Thanks, but you don't have to be a genius to make such PCB's...  ;D

The microcontroller used on these PCB's is a very small Attiny13.
I don't know if I'll release the code. Flashing the Attiny13 is a delicate matter. The reset pin has to be disabled so no further programming is possible with an ISP programmer. I've received soooo many messages from people who haven't had success in flashing the attiny24 or atmega8...

In theory these PCB's work with any kind of potentiometer-based joystick. Because of the calibration you'll always get the right range.
But unfortunately the PSP stick is so inaccurate; it would only work if a big dead-zone is applied.

Keep in mind these PCB's are tailored to fit into the GC-style replacement stick, where no dead-zone is required :)

Just got my 2 kits today. And so far i'm impressed.

Haven't had the time to to test it that much. But did a quick comparison on goldeneye with new pcb and the old attiny chipped stick. And now I can actually do the first 2 headshots with sniper on Dam with ease ;) was a pain before :) nice work Micro. Have to buy 2 more kits as soon as I get some money :)

Hey micro, thank you for your work and outstanding pcb production  ;D

It would be nice if you don't take the eagle/gerber files for that pcb into any grave  ::)
I do recognize your work and will give full credit to it as you did a hell of a job but i have to say:
Most of these retro console projects get a "rest" and then vanish into the deep of the internets, all of your work would be lost then.I think you wanted people to enjoy their N64 Controller to the fullest, which is honorable, and you shoed how it is done right!

If you don't, maybe considere going open source, even if that means some chinese copycats will get their hands on it, it will prevent far more N64 from the trash can than you and me can imagine.

If you ever decide to make a second batch write me please i would like to get "some" of them, as even my friends still own and play their N64.

The sticks look like Gamecube sticks but they're smaller and the top of the joystick cap is just plastic instead of rubber:

With the N64 Stick Converter PCB it's also possible to install a real Gamecube stick from a genuine Gamecube controller. But that's much much more work and requires dremeling, sanding, glueing, etc.
This is a picture of my controller which I made a few years ago. It got the stick of a third-party Gamecube controller.

I'm not a Smash Brothers player but I know that smash moves (stick right + attack I believe) will work with my PCB because there's no more lag. :)

I just bought two replacement PCB kits from him and they are amazing. I bought them to play Ocarina of Time and it fixed the Quickspin issue. Movement feels excellent overall and I feel like this is better than the original control stick. It took me about 30 mins to put together and the instructions were very clear. Highly recommended

So far the reception of the PCB's was very positive  - thank you all for your praises!  ;D

I'm planning on making another batch in late August or September. This time with preorder and prepayment (see 1st post).


I've also released the source code and hex file of the program. I know there are some experienced guys who want to program their own microcontrollers and now they can.  :D

I just wanted to say that I performed this mod with your 1.2 code and an ATtiny24 and it works perfectly.  I'll have to replace the potentiometer to get the full experience but it was lots of fun (and some frustration!) to put one of these together.  I'll definitely be watching out for when these go on sale again.

Hi there, Micro,

I purchased one of your boards (thanks for that, it arrived just recently)

I installed the board into one of the GC style N64 sticks and it was working great.

I noticed however, on a character select screen, that if I pushed down very slightly that it would keep holding down even when I let go.

I tried to re calibrate using the method outlined in the PDF and had similar results. So I tried to calibrate it using the dead zone one that is for the PSP slider (it didn't do anything, the stick didn't work at all). So I tried again to bridge the "NORM" pins and  re calibrate it how it is outlined in the PDF.

Anyways, long story short - (after trying to re calibrate several times) the stick now, in game, only moves left and right. Now I can't move up and down at all!

Is there any way that I can somehow restore the stick to how it came originally and start over?

Or is the circuit board now kaput?  :)

Yes, turn off the console, bridge the "NORM" pins, turn on console, wait 2 seconds, turn off console, remove jumper :) After that the PCB will be in the original condition.

Most likely the PCB is allright :D
I'm guessing the stick's faulty behaviour is caused by bad solder joints. You should resolder the the potentiometer's 6 pins, especially those 3 pins for the y-axis, which doesn't work at the moment. One of the three pins for each axis is GND which is a little bit harder to solder even more if you don't have a decent solder iron and the much practice in soldering. The ground pins are connected to the ground plane which will suck away the heat from your iron. You have to apply heat to these GND pins for a longer time compared to the other pins.

If you're not sure if your solder joints are okay, then just post a (sharp) picture of your PCB and I'll tell ya  ;D

PS: You also need good solder joints on your pinheader or you won't be able to enable calibration mode. The pinheader's middle pin is GND and because of that it's harder to solder, too.

Should I try and hook up the PCB to a programmer and reflash it with the HEX file you provided in the first post?

Would that certainly put it back to how it was?

It looks to me like the reset pin isn't connected up with a 10kohm resistor for reprogramming (which is why I haven't tried it). But I could be wrong. Just don't wanna break this thing further :)

Looks like I might need to order a few more boards off you when you do the second batch! In case I break some.

Put me down for 4 more circuit boards :)

Edit: After some further testing it seems you are correct. The potentiometer seems faulty - but not the solder points. The y-axis doesn't move, but I can move it with a screwdrive and it works. Where can I get a replacement potentiometer from?

What is the name of this particular part? So that I can search for it. Or is it best to find a GC controller and rip it out of there?

Hmm, that's strange indeed!
But maybe it can be fixed.

The actual potentiometers (the orange ones) can be detached from the silver metal stick itself.
To do that you have to pinch the potentiometers sides with your fingers. If got finger nails it will be easier ;)

After that you can remove the potentiometer:

But that's only the case if you desolder the potentiometer's three pins first.

Probably it would be best if you desolder the y-axis-potentiometer's three pins and un-clip it. Maybe we can see the problem then. Is it the potentiometer or the stick itself?

But maybe the problem is that the potentiometer isn't correctly attached to the stick (but it looks ok on the pics). In that case you turn the potentiometer with your screw driver until it's in the same position as the x-axis-potentiometer. Then you can clip it to the stick.

I managed to fix it!

The problem was the little black part inside the potentiometer (it didn't sit quite right). I de soldered the y-axis and removed the problematic part. Then (to avoid desoldering everything) I replaced that part because I remembered that I had a spare potentiometer sitting around from the GC stick that I originally ordered  :)

I pulled the little black part out of that potentiometer and replaced it. Now the stick is gripping to the potentiometer without any problems!

I calibrated the stick and it all works brilliantly :D

I have put the stick inside the wireless controller that I made from your other thread... it's the ultimate combo  8)

@cheema: Good work!  :) I'm glad you managed to fix it. But just to be sure: You didn't exchange the potentiometer itself, but only the little black plastic disc, right?

@Robodiplodicus: Yes, it's written for the attiny24A. Have a look inside the .c file, it's explained in the very beginning of the file.

@MATSTERMIND: No, absolutely not. I don't want people to use that code because you need to set the fuses so "/RESET" can be used as a normal I/O pin. It's so easy to screw up and brick the attiny13...

Hey I was looking in the .c file and it says to switch the x-axis you do pin 10 "active-low" what does active low mean?

Edit: I got everything working right now, but it feels like the deadzone is too small, I saw that one of the pins was labeled "enable calibration with deadzones active low" how does that work exactly?

Active low means you got to connect the pin to a logical low level (=GND) to activate the function.

ok, hmm, so if I ground the "enable calibration with deadzones active low" pin after I calibrate the joystick there will be a bigger deadzone than would be with just a regular calibration?

No. The pin is to execute calibration with deadzones. It's intended for analog sticks that don't return to their neutral default position like the PSP slider sticks.
Please refer to the PDF to see how that works (Have you even read the PDF?)

With normal calibration there's no deadzone at all because the sticks that come with my PCB don't need a deadzone.

Ok, I see, I read the pdf earlier I should have looked back at it again.  I just finished the mod and the controller works great!!!!!!111 The Programming calibration was an awesome idea, here are some picks if anyone cares.

So after playing with the new controller I made, I've decided to implement a 5% deadzone by changing micros code.  I'm using Atmel studio and here is what I've got, it's not working right now, I'm not exactly sure why any help would be appreciated.   Here's the relevant part of the code, all I need to change is the calibration function yes?

Hello, just wanted to say thank you very much for this!
As a serious N64 gamer it feels very good to have solid
and reliable controls now for a foreseeable future with many
hours of gaming.

I have assembled and tested one of the four kits today,
and it seems to work very nice indeed.


One question: When I calibrated and then tested a game for the first time, the "left-right-axis"
movements of the stick were inactive - so I took it apart again for trouble shooting and noticed
I'd missed to solder the pins that connect to the "left-right" pot.

But after soldering those and reassembling, it seems to work fine - but should I do the calibration again
just in case?

Haven't gotten my pcbs, but can't wait!

Quick question...when calibrating for "4 seconds," I assume it doesn't matter how quickly that occurs, does it? I can power on the system, carefully pick up the controller, and then start rotating the stick for 4 seconds, right?

Or does the calibration need to happen quickly? Does it not start calibrating until it gets moved?

Yes, turn on the console, pick up the controller and swirl the stick a few times. It doesn't have to be done quickly :)

The calibration starts immediatly after the first power-on, and then you got about 60 seconds to do your spins.

Got them today! Woo hoo!

Any tips before I get to work on them? Will absolutely be using some helping hands...but what about getting those first couple soldering points in? Can't just hold the pcb with the helping hands, because the potentiometer will fall out. Hold the potentiometer with the helping hands, and set the pcb on top? That makes more sense.

Any other tips from people that have done this before? Thanks everybody, and thanks micro!

And one more question...the sticks on my "gamecube style" sticks look ok...but they're noticeably smaller than a gamecube stick (more like the size of the N64 stick).

I see these on ebay though...has anyone tried something like this?

For a couple bucks I'd be will to give it a try. Looks like it might have a bit larger diameter than the gamecube style N64 replacement sticks I already bought. Of course I need those for the housing.....but if there are superior sticks out there, I'm all for it. Bigger is better here as far as I'm concerned, as long as it still fits in the housing and everything.

I see you did a true GameCube stick mod micro...but your YouTube video is like 3 years old. Do GameCube sticks fit on the metal stick? And I see you said the octagonal gate needs to be replaced. Sounds like it's not a super easy mod.

I got my 4 kits today. I am in Toledo,OH so I bet other US customers will be getting theirs very soon. I modded one controller and couldn't be happier with the results! It is awesome to have a stick that is super durable and be able to do the sword spin attack in Zelda OoC.

I played some Mario Kart 64 and have to say the control is much nicer with the mod kit, even though the stock gamecube joystick worked.

For those waiting to receive and install, I recommend that you take your time and follow Micro's installation sheet carefully. I was glad to put my together and have it calibrate and work properly the first time. It would really be a bummer to have to dissemble the controller and have to fix something because one got in a hurry.

Thanks a million for a great product Micro! :)

OFF Topic: I sent you an email asking about possibility of one of these modded sticks for use in a Atari 5200 controller. Very curious if you have a moment to answer my email Micro.

Just wondering, does this PCB really work with any common potentiometer joystick out there such as a PSX one? You simply need to solder it on, calibrate it and it will work fine? Thanks a lot Micro!

* Yes you can use my PCB to install a real Gamecube stick but you still have to deal with aligning and glueing in the stick + gate which can be quite time consuming ;)
* One way to prevent the stick from falling out of the PCB: Put some solder on your iron. Put in the stick, press it against the PCB with one hand. With your other hand solder one pin+pad. This will result in a not so nice solder joint but the stick can't fall out of the PCB anymore. Then solder all the other pins and also rework that first bad solder joint :)

@Catastrophic: Yes, PSX should work. But you also have the problem of perfectly aligning stick + gate.


I still got about a dozen PCB's left from that batch. So if someone needs/wants some PCB's, just drop me a line :)

You're right micro...gamecube stick needs a bigger "shaft." haha. You could probably glue it on, but trying to get it nice and straight up in the controller would be super hard, and I don't know how weird the smaller gate of the n64 controller would feel.

Have modified 2 controllers so far with your PCB...and the results are awesome! Thanks so much.

Have done 8 controllers now, and they've all worked perfectly on the first try! And I'm not a soldering expert by any means (have replaced 10-15 game batteries).

Something I tried to do was reuse the original wires. The wires that came with the new control stick...the little white piece that plugs into the board is a really tight fit, so reusing the original one is much easier. But on the new controllers, the wires aren't as long...and it BARELY reaches. In fact, if you desolder the original wires instead of cut them, they're already stripped and tinned!

So excited about these, and so glad you made them micro. Cheers!

Before I attempt this myself, I'd like to ask everyone who has gotten these PCBs; has anyone tried/had any success with fitting an XB360 pot assembly and thumbstick into the aftermarket joystick casing? What issues, if any, have there been and have you been able to rectify them in any way? I ask because the tops of the 360 sticks fit my thumb really nicely, and I'd like to do that if possible, rather than having to epoxy something together.

I got my third party N64 controllers today, made by Eaxus.
These controllers got the original N64 Joystick, but with potentionmeters.
Only 4 pins used for the joystick to the pcb, like old style N64 controllers, very easy to mod.

No. Original n64 joysticks uses photodiode and rotary encoder in a completely different protocol. The controller you got, uses just a pot for each axis. And yes, pot joysticks are very easy to mod  ;)

Doesn't seem like the PCB of the joystick would have any effect on the rest of the controller's pcb that the controller pak goes through. Will test mine out soon and check (with newest PCB revision).

Heard about the PCB fix for the stick replacement and this thread, so I just joined the forums now. Do you still sell/gonna sell more of these PCB boards? :) and this will fix the skipping problems when you push the thumbstick right? like instead of moving from step 2 to 4-6-8-10-12-16-20-24, it will hit all steps like 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-etc.?

I just bought and installed a pair of these gamecube styled sticks and I was really disappointed that I can't play Goldeneye with them.  :'( I'd really want to save my N64 from the scrap heap.

Alright I just soldered an analog stick to one of the boards. Getting the solder to stick to the holes was a pain so some of the solder joints are a bit too thick. I'm fairly satisfied nonetheless.

Is this ok micro?(sorry about the blurriness)

Your solder joints are pretty big (you soldered both pads), but I agree with nathan. As long as there are no shorts between them you shouldn't have any problems.

Usually it should be easy to solder in the stick and the pin header. But there are 3 solder pads that are connected to a big ground plane.
Soldering these pins can be a little bit more difficult if you got a weak soldering iron. In that case it helps to set the temperature higher and/or to hold the soldering iron tip for a longer time to the pad & pin.

WHOOPS. Now I know what I did wrong. Instead of heating up the pin from the joystick and then applying solder directly to it I instead relied on the soldering iron to melt the solder. Guess I'll keep that in mind when I make the next one.

I carefully checked if there were any bridges but found none. I suppose it will work just fine. What heat do you usually use when you solder?

Unfortunately that's a very bad way to solder. Maybe you should think about removing the solder joints (with desolder braid or a desolder pump) and solder the pins again.
In order to get a good solder joint you have to heat the pin and the pad at the same time while applying fresh solder. Always use solder with flux! :D

Nice video. Very helpful! The solder I used were a few leftovers I brought home with me from school and they've been sitting in a cabinet for a couple of months. When I got the solder to stick to the board I held the soldering iron to the pin for a few seconds to even out the solder. Looking on the top of the plate you can see that the solder went through properly. I currently don't own a desoldering pump but I think the joints are passable for now. Thanks for the info!

One more question though. On most soldering irons I've seen, when you apply solder on to the tip it flows in a bright gray colour like the way it should. When I applied solder to my iron it instead just kind of burned with a brown colour(presumably the flux). Is it because the iron is too corroded? Or is the solder just too old?

Glad you like it! If you didn't use too much force during calibration then your test app should show at least +/- 81 steps per axis and at most +/-84 steps. So yes, a small difference is absolutely ok!  :D

Hard to say, but the moment you apply fresh solder to your iron the tip shouldn't be brown already. Maybe the temperature is too high?

This is just brilliant, can't wait till you get these back in stock!

One thing I've been wondering about is the possibility of adding some non-linear mapping options that emulate the behavior of modern analogue controllers ps/xbox etc. particularly to make n64 shooters more controllable on these sticks.

I think the reason shooters like GE/PD feel twitchy on these modern analogue sticks is due to the controller/most games not taking advantage of any exponential curve to map the inputs.
*I may be completely wrong calling it exponential mapping but that's what I know from RC radios where the function of adding a more gradual input curve near the deadzone is called "expo"

The original n64 stick has what feels like some hardware expo built in since it's very easy to find the end of the deadzone and it has a precise resistance that's proportional to the amount of stick input. That combination makes small /precise inputs relatively easy. Playing n64 games/shooters on more modern analogues with linear mapping means making small movements is trickier especially near the higher resistance deadzone, I always feel like there's a "hump" of resistance right at the start of the movement which is annoying.

The hori minipad works better than others on n64 I think because the overall resistance on the stick is very light so that initial hump and deadzone imprecision is less noticeable, but I believe the mapping is still linear and I would bet a nonlinear mapping could help even there.

So my question is this... with a custom coded Atmel on one of these pcbs it should be possible to write some software into the controller itself to add some more gradual input mapping/expo right?
Have you considered doing something like this if it's possible, that would be very interesting to me!

Granted I haven't tried one of these pcb and your current firmware yet so maybe the issue is already solved with your calibration approach but if not I'd be interested in your comments.

No, I definitely won't invest time and labor to try out non-linear mapping options. The x- and y-axis position of the original N64 stick is linear to the angle of the stick... IMO the different feeling is caused by the weaker spring inside potentiometer-based sticks. The original N64 stick had a strong spring and you had to use quite some force to move the stick...

Hi there, just joined after reading about this bit of brilliance. Have a couple of older sticks which are on the way out but more importantly, I got two chinese knock off controllers a year or so ago, which are both useless for goldeneye, because of the increased sensitivity etc... After 10 mins of work, and even though my stick cap is half broken, this board DELIVERS. I have never seen such a smooth accurate stick. Feels better than a brand new stock OEM controller. I am going to recommend this kit to everyone I know!

Anyone know how to open these sticks? I attempted to open one that I didn't care too much about for practice but damn is it hard! I even bought a box cutter/utility knife for the occasion and it was still hard. The knife would barely fit and there's knife marks all across the case. Eventually I got it open but not before the clips broke and the case looked like a mangled mess. There seems to be 2 clips or something near the circles where the screws would go in. They're inside the case. But these can be damaged if you're sticking a knife in the seams near the circles. Anyone have any idea on how to open this stick without breaking the clips and causing the case to become mangled with knife marks? Any other tools I can use? I thought a box cutter would be the smallest knife I could use but I also have a butter like knife that has a thin blade. Hmm, I'll need another practice dummy but advice would be appreciated!

Ouch! Sounds risky. I'm thinking of super gluing the old one since I don't want the 9 dollars to go to waste. It won't look pretty, hell the tabs will be broken but it'll get the job done. I'm still eager on any other ideas on how to open that joystick.

I just used a stanlyknife and just kept prying it open around the seams.. eventually I could crack it open. Just be carefull not to stab yourself :P

I received my PCBs today, it took three days in shipping.

My Ebay GC style shell had it glued all the way around. I got it open though, it took about 30 minutes to open the shell. After that it was a breeze to solder up and install.

My N64 controller skills are a bit rusty - I wasn't able to finish the Dam map in 007: Goldeneye. But man, it is precise and smooth. I noticed no problems with it - I even managed to calibrate it right on the first try.

I have to fix the other one and take a 1 on 1 with a friend!

I have a question. What do you guys use to hold the PCB in place? Do you use a helping hand or the panavisr junior/201? I was thinking about the panavisr junior since soldering the bare PCB is hard. I've been practicing on the default GameCube PCB and it keeps on moving when I try to solder. Not only that but there's not a lot of room to soldrt.

By the way I wanted to point out that I'm an extreme beginner at soldering. You learn with failure though.

I had a pair of helping hands and I also bent the thicker pins outwards a bit so it would stay flush against the PCB. For the wires I stripped off 2-4mm of the wire's coat and put them into the hole and let the connector end pull down on the wire so it would stay in the hole while I was soldering it.

HI everyone. My boards made it to me a few days ago, all the way to the US. A few minutes of work (Mostly opening the sticks) and they were installed and functioning flawlessly. My suggestion for opening the sticks without completely destroying the housing is to use a very small screwdriver and a small hammer. Tap around the housing at the seam just enough until the glue breaks. Then peal the glued tabs from the back gently enough to break the glue but not the tab. Thanks Micro for everything. Now my N64 will function perfectly for a very very long time.

I used a pair of semi-sharp side cutters and carefully peeled back about 2-4mm of the wire's insulation.

Getting the two cover halves seperated was the hardest work. An sharp hobby/X-acto knife helps a lot, along with very thin blade screw drivers.

Soldering wasn't that hard, just keep an eye on not accidentally creating shortcuts were there aren't supposed to be any. Check every pin twice with your multimeter's beeper function for them.

The new stick is gorgeous. It has the right amount of resistance that you would expect from a brandnew genuine Nintendo 64 control stick. Playing GoldenEye and Super Mario 64 went with excellent accuracy, perfect deadzone and instant response to inputs - thanks to micro's PCB and potentiometers.

Ok, I know that I was doing some gushing over this kit in my last post, but I've now had the chance to try my friend's Hori mini pad and compare it to the stick built with this kit... This kit destroys the Hori. It has a smoother feel for the stepping IMO, and not to mention it's installed in a full size pad with no cramping. I'm going to save up and order another three kits, and put together an arsenal for Goldeneye tourneys.

Anyway I droped my iron onto my lap myself putting these on.. >:( .so in a way I can say I bled for this.... LOL

Has anyone from the US received theirs already? I live in Virginia and I still haven't received mine. I'll make sure to check the mail today just in case.

I've also decided to use leaded solder since I can't work with lead free solder. I'm practicing on the pcb that comes with the gc stick and the holes are pretty tiny. I'm using a radio shack 25 watt iron so hopefully it'll be enough. All I need is some stabilizing force, which I bought a panavise, so we'll see how it goes. Anyone ever use the radio shack desoldering iron, the one with the bulb?

I live in PA and received mine. Hopefully yours will arrive soon. I have a cheap radioshack soldering iron and it worked out flawlessly. If you can get a fine tip instead of a chisel one, that would be beneficial. I used the corner of a small chisel tip against the work and it heated the joints fine. I've also been soldering for quite a few years so I have some experience. Watch the video posted earlier on this forum for some good info or a quick refresher if your rusty.

Thanks! I've checked out that soldering video by curiousinventor many times. Lol. My pcbs also arrived today so that's good. Now I'm just waiting for the panavise so I can have some stability while I solder. I'm going to practice first though, just to get the hang of things. I've been soldering on and off since 2012. To think it started with removing a battery in my metroid zero mission for the gba.

One last suggestion I can offer is that I used a small set of vice grips to hold the pot "lever" gently, if you will, and let the board sit on top. if you get anxious like I did, that will work well. Definitely make sure to solder one pin first and check to make sure it is flat. from there it should fly by! Funny you mention the battery thing, I was thinking about checking all of my batteries and replacing the ones that were shot. Lol.

Thanks for the tip! So far for the batteries I've used the electric tape trick as I'm not too confident on my soldering ability to replace the batteries especially when there's so many components next to them. This is especially true on the gba games. So I just used a flat blade screwdriver and carefully pried the tabs from the battery. I then slipped a new battery in between the tabs and electric taped everything. It works well and the pressure from the game case should keep it stable. It's not ideal however. Ideally I would love to use a battery holder but I have no idea which type to use. I don't have to shave them down or anything like that. Maybe I'll find something someday. I also have a retrode that I can use to backup most of my games. A DS flash cart will backup the gba games so I should be covered.

Pro-tip 1: The long cable supplied with replacement joystick can get in the way of the Z button movement range. Cut the cable as short as possible, using the original control stick cable as a reference.

Pro-tip 2: While you're at it, clean the controller from all the sweaty dirt that got into the gaps over the years.

So the soldering didn't go so well. I attempted to solder the potentiometer but it's not flush with the pcb. So then I attempted to desolder the potentiometer but it wouldn't come out. Now I just called it quits. Maybe I don't have the high quality tools needed to get it done, I know my soldering experience is zilch. I'm attempting to find someone to do the soldering for me, if not maybe I'll try again. I still want to know why that potentiometer is not coming out. How rather unfortunate. Great packaging though micro.

I think I figured out the issue. The potentiometer has 4 ground pins and 6 pins for each of the axes: x and y. The ground pins must be what I'm having trouble with. My 25 watt iron is having a hard time desoldering them. Wick is not helping, neither is that radioshack desoldering iron. I guess this is where a temperature controlled station would help. I want to desolder this so I can re seat the potentiometer and make it straight again. Anyone have any suggestions? If I can't desolder that potentiometer, then I"ll have to put this on hold until I figure something out.

Couple tips to people having trouble. I start each one by holding the potentiometer/stick in a pair of helping hands, UPSIDE down, and then setting the fresh new pcb on top of that. I just grab the little metal controller stick with the helping hands, get it level, and then slide the pcb onto it. Make sure it's all level first, and then start soldering (and even though it's facing up, this is technically the bottom).

For the wiring...I had great luck reusing the original wires. As you all know, the plastic connector on the replacement sticks doesn't fit 100% perfect. What I would do is just desolder the wires from the original n64 pcb, then peel/break off the clear plastic that holds all 6 wires together. Now I have 6 pre-stripped and pre-tinned wires! For this, I'd hold the pcb in the helping hands (again, upside down), then go wire by wire from underneath (so technically from the top, and up through the holes so I'm soldering on the bottom).

I got my GC style replacement joystick in the mail this week, and it has a problem. The connector on the cable appears to be a little too big to fit, so I am unable to plug it in. I tried for like 20 minutes, yet was unable to fit it on there. Any tips? Should I just contact the seller on eBay and ask him for a new one?

Great tips for soldering. I got a panavise junior instead of helping hands since it seemed like it would be more stable. I originally probably didn't have the potentiometer level when I first soldered. I'm taking a break though, I'll come back to it probably in the summer as it'll be warmer to solder in the garage. Also it'll allow me time to get a temperature controlled station as I think the radio shack 25 watt didn't have enough power to desolder those ground pins. If anyone has had any experience desoldering the potentiometer then I'm all ears. Those ground pins are pretty stubborn. I will say the leaded solder works great, very smooth.

On another note, if micro ever looks or anyone else, where can I get replacement potentiometers with the right specifications? It's pretty hard to find potentiometers that meet the length width and height requirements. I found one that looked identical to the one you sent but the website was in dutch and they would only ship to the netherlands. Any advice?

Oh yeah on the connector being too big. You have to trim with a nail clipper or any other tool. Here's a youtube video. Be careful not to trim too deep cut off the wire.

With the help of the video, I trimmed the plastic down with a box cutter, and managed to connect it. It works great! Hopefully it should work even better when I get the new PCB. Thanks for the help!

Yes, it seems like some sticks got a connector that doesn't fit very well... You can trim down the connector or just use the original Nintendo cable as nathan118 suggested

With a little bit of experience it should be a breeze to desolder the stick, either with desoldering braid or a desoldering pump. But as you don't have enough experience that can be a difficult job for you.
It's also possible to carefully un-clip the two orange potentiometers from the stick. Then the stick and the two potentiometers can be desoldered individually. An easy way to desolder the a potentiometer is to heat up all three pins at once. The potentiometer should fall out off the PCB automatically. Remaining solder in the holes can then be removed with desoldering braid or a desoldering pump.

Maybe it would be best to wait if you got more experience with desoldering. Or give the PCB a buddy who's more experienced :D

25W could be a bit on the weak side, indeed. 40W and above will help you with large connections.
For your information, I'm using a Weller WHS40 (40W) temperature controlled station. However, you don't need temperature control if you're using regular solder with lead content (e.g. Sn40Pb60), as I do. From my understanding, temperature control is necessary when using lead-free solder which needs higher temperatures for melting.

Another big deal is finding the right solder tip for your job. Pencil tips may give you a quite hard time unless you want to solder small things. You'll benefit from using chisel tips for medium sized connections and wide flat blade tips for large connections.

But give the desoldering pump a try.  :)

So apparently those 4 pins I was talking about, they're not connected to ground as micro said but they're connected to the metal body of the potentiometer. I guess that's what I was trying to get across. Since the heat is distributed all across the metal body, that's why it was hard for that 25 watt radio shack iron to desolder those points. So I'll come back to this when I get a nice chisel tip with a temperature controlled station.

By the way, micro I found some potentiometers on mouser that would be equivalent; however, the dimensions of length and width are slightly larger. The ones you supplied are 16.5 mm length and width, but these are 21 and 20 mm for those dimensions. Would they still fit on your pcb? I know your pcb has two different sets of holes for potentiometers but I don't know if the latter dimensions that I mentioned are too big for your pcb.

Having issues with the two I got. Calibrated fine and they work perfectly when I do that. However if I have my n64 powered off for a number of hours, the sticks stop working and I need to calibrate again.
Jumper is not inserted, so it can't be resetting to calibration mode and there's no bridging between those two pins. Any idea what else could be causing the pcb to -forget- it's calibration after being powered off for awhile?

Here we go. It's the best I can do at the moment with the current camera I have. Not the best soldering, especially as I tried to go over it several times to try and figure out what the issue was. Strange thing is I can leave it powered off for awhile and it still works, but if I come back to my n64 pad later I need to calibrate it again fully.

Very strange indeed... Does the problem occur with both PCB's you got?

I suggest you clean up your PCB with q-tips and isopropyl alcohol, then take again some sharper pics.

Yes, it happens with both pcbs I have. Unfortunately I don't have access to a camera that gives sharper images at the moment. I'm still puzzled what could be causing it. If a solder bridge somewhere could be and where likely that'd be on the board, though the analog works perfectly when I do have it calibrated, or if the pcb is faulty. I seem to be the only one having this issue, so the later seems unlikely I think.

I'll try and clean it up further later and see if that fixes anything. Any more suggestions would be appreciated. Spent far longer than I should on this. :(

I don't think the PCB's are faulty. Also if they did work at some point, that means they're flashed with the right code. I've flashed all the PCB's with the same code in one big session. The values calculated during the calibration are stored into the EEPROM which remains its data even if you cut the power. You successfully execute the calibration once and that's it.

I guess your problems could be caused by bad solder joints. But to be really sure I need to see good pictures of your PCB's, not blurry ones...

Attempt to take the picture at a 45 degree angle rather then at 90 degrees. Also if you are zooming in via the camera, zoom all the way out and move your camera closer. Also avoid flash and try to take the photos in more natural lighting.

And if you are using a better quality camera, turn your ISO down and open up your aperture (lower f/stop number).

Normally just taking the photo at 45 degrees and holding it closer makes the world of difference, even if the photo is a bit blurry when you take it, since you are physically closer you can reduce the image resolution in an image editor and make it a bit sharper.

As for your problem if you haven't already I'd check your points with a continuity tester.

I got scared when i read this! So i tested mine again! I works flawless! *phu* If i where you i would suck up solder and resolder the point near INV.Y. It looks really dull.

Hey just wanted to say that I installed the pcbs I ordered and they both work perfectly! There is a noticeable difference between this pcb and the standard one you get with replacement sticks. I was very impressed with the build quality, the layout of the pcb as well as the ability to calibrate the stick once it's all put together.

is 0.32 60/40 rosin core solder what i need?
are the fumes from the flux anything to worry about?

still another week+- before the pcbs get to me but i want to prepare before hand  :P

I like to work at around 550F for work like this. I find it to be a nice balance between transferring heat effectively and not burning up all the flux. The wattage isn't as important as a good quality soldering iron with an adjustable temperature, imo. I've never come across an iron too shitty/cold to make proper joints (for small electrical jobs such as this), but there are LOTS that are too hot and burn up everything in sight.

Not really. If you were doing 8 hours a day, 5 days a week or sticking your face in the fumes and intentionally inhaling, it would be cause for an extractor. Just be mindful of not breathing the fumes too heavily and you'll be ok.


It is of my opinion that oxidization is the #1 most important and misunderstood factor of soldering. Transferring heat to the components properly is #2. Once you understand how they work, you'll understand how to solder well in no time.

Got 'em in the mail today (Canada), took about a week  :)

@Grambo thanks for the info!

edit: Did 1 PCB today...oh man those vids make soldering look easy. Opening up the GC case was very hard, broke one tab but eventually managed to get a clean break with minor scratches on the casing (the glue was thicker than I thought, had to cut deep). Then when I was soldering I ended up with two questionable connections that I couldn't de-solder with braid (oddly all of my solders were shiny though), and the board wasn't completely flat with the potentiometer and I wasn't about to re-solder it again. Luckily calibration worked fine and I compared it to my original controller and they are identical in execution. I should be able to do my second PCB perfectly now that I know what to expect  ::)

Side note, I had one of those $10 hong king controllers laying around and I took out the A+B+C's button pad and put it into my original and now I don't have any weak button press issues. The quality of the pads in those controllers are the only good thing about them.

I'm pretty annoyed with myself right now. I cut the wires down to 5 cm. When I was stripping them, I fucked up a couple of times and had to cut them a little more. When I had soldered them and put everything back together, I discovered that they were too short to reach plug on the controller. I'm sitting here now with a useless thumbstick because I'm missing half a centimeter of wire. It seems to me like my options are to (a) order a new thumbstick, or (b) cut off the wire from my original thumbstick and use that (which I really don't want to do). Anyone got any other suggestions? Also, I'd suggest changing the guide to 6 cm so there's a little slack for dumbasses like me.

If he decides to use the original stick's cable I suggest he should desolder the cable instead of cutting it off. IIRC the original cable is quite short. It would be a bad surprise if he cuts off the cable and ends up with the same problem.  ;D

I'll probably do this, although the only controller I have with me at the moment is the only one I have that's still semi-usable. I'll wait a week until I can get my hands on one of the absolutely ruined controllers I have.

It's that bad, huh? I watched the video a few times before I did it. When I was soldering, my biggest issue is that the solder would cling to the soldering iron, and not to the PCB. I got a little better as I progressed, but that was still my biggest issue. I've soldered a few times before, although only wire-to-wire.

So what can I do? Remove the solder with the soldering iron and try again? Or did I do it so poorly that I ruined the PCB?

Ok, thanks for the help. I'll buy some desolder braid then. Two questions:
1. Is there any difference in quality for desolder braid? Can I just buy the cheap stuff from eBay, and that will work well enough?
2. Can I just keep soldering and desoldering the PCB until I get it right, or am I damaging the components by doing this?

Are these still being made/available?  I've been getting back into N64 a bit lately and, like a lot of people, i've got some controllers that are pretty well ground out.  I'd like to replace some of them with the gamecube style stick, esp if those work better for some games that require a lot of movement.

I ordered some of your boards and mounted them.
Everything works well but i have a strange issue, and as no one mentionned it, i wonder what i could do wrong.
I'll try to explain with my poor english:
I tried my fresh new pads on GoldenEye. It's the kind of game where you need to be very precise. Everything started well but when i change for "aiming mode" (you know, by pressing R), the target don't move anymore when it's in the very tiny corners (up right, up left, down right, down left); With regular pad, in aiming mode, when you go in the corner (up righ for exemple), your "aiming window" move to this direction (up right) until it reaches the sky.
WIth the new sticks, the "aiming window" don't move, the target is in the corner but it don't move the window.

Can anyone try this and let me know about the results ?

I don't own Goldeneye, but here's a little test you should try out:

Open your controller and temporarily remove the upper half of the replacement stick unit's case. Now that the octagonal gate isn't restricting the stick any longer, does your crosshair in aiming mode work like it does with a regular controller?

Well, i tried. Without the octogonal shape, i can reach the maximum of each axis, and so in GoldenEye, you can reach the point where the target make move the aiming window in the extrem end of the corner.
As i told you before, i've done the calibrating operation with the octogonal shape in place.
How does the calibration work ? If it detects the maximum of each axis, and then calculate the "corner position", maybe the shape doesn't allow the stick to reach this point ?

Yes, the shape of the octagonal gate is a little bit different from the original N64 stick one. And it doesn't let the stick reach its max values in the corners. You got 3 options to fix that:

1) calibrate the stick again:
The installation guide will tell you how to re-enable the calibration mode again. But instead of moving the stick in a circular motion as proposed in the manual, just move the stick from the center to the 4 corners:

center > top left corner > center > top right > center > bottom right > center > bottom left > center

This will make sure you'll reach the maximum even in the corners. But at the same time the stick will get more sensitive. And you will have a small dead margin when moving the stick up, down, left, right. For example if you move the stick only up, the stick will reach its maximum value some mm before it actually touches the restricting gate. This is inevitable.
You have to try out how much more sensitive the stick gets in the end. :D

2) cut out the corners
It's possible to enlarge the octagonal gate in the corners by using a file/dremel/sanding paper. I guess it would be hard to enlarge all four corners equally. And of course this is not reversible!

3) modify the source code
You can also modify the source code (see 1st post of this thread). You could try out different max values. You could also eliminate the dead margin from 1) and tweak the sensitivity.
To modify and compile the program you need Atmel AVR Studio 5 (or 6). To flash the microcontroller on the PCB with your modified program you need an AVR programmer.

I'd definitely try out option 1)  :D

I definitly don't have the knowledge and gears for the 3rd option.
Something i thought about, i'll try to swap the octogonal shapes (genuine and 3rd part). I mean, i'll check if there is any difference, even very little, between the two ones, and use the smaller (if there is one smaller) for calibrating, and use the wider as stick holder cap.

It is amazing work you've done, and I have a group of people here in the U.S. here that would like to make their controllers last, and I am determined to help them to stop using cheap third party original style replacements that get worn out or just don't work. Gamecube style replacements are the answer, and your fix for the sensitivity issue is the only way to make them work well enough to use for some of the best, and still most commonly played, n64 games.

Unfortunately it's a fact that the octagonal gate is different. You have to choose your top priority. If you want to have the same values in the four diagonal corners, then you have to recalibrate the stick while not touching the plastic gate all the way up/down/left and right.
I already told you one way to calibrate the stick. Another way would be to make the stick cap's shaft bigger. You could wrap some adhesive tape around the stick's plastic cap's shaft, for example 5 layers. After the calibration you can remove the tape again. May be 3 layers are enough, maybe you need 10. You really have to try. :)

Normally the stick get's calibrated in a way so it got about the same values as an original N64 analog stick when moving the stick all the way up/down/left or right. Calibrating the stick as described will make it (a little) more sensitive, it's a trade-off.

@theeternal00: When I'm sure I won't make another batch I'll release the PCB files. But I don't feel obliged to have these PCB's on stock for 365 days a year!
Also, I believe in 5 to 10 years everyone can use his old original N64 sticks again and just reproduce the expendable parts in a 3D printer...

I was just telling that i need to test the different "fixing method" before choosing the best one.
Is there a way, by programming, that once the calibrating values are setted by moving the stick, the microcontroller adjust the values by reducing the max values.
Some kind of automatic trim ?

Yes, there's already a limit implented in the program. The minimum range of each axis is +/- 81; higher values than +/- 84 gets clipped to +/- 84.

Hello guys! Just a quick question, I was playing Jet Force Gemini and noticed that it was hard to aim using the GC Style joystick with the PCB.

HEX filé won't tell the PCB Guys how to make their boards :'(

I'm thinking about if it would be possible to reprogram the chip that comes with the replacement joystick. Anyone have a clue? There is no visible marks on the chip, so I really don't know which one it is...

This + marshallh hdmi mod, I can't sleep til these 2 mods are out. My Amiga 1200 is future proof right now with HDMI, optical mouse etc, so now I need the N64 to try to rival those magical sprites from the early 90s. +Micros pcb:s Will make sure we can controll the n64 in the future.

I've got 4 brand spanking NIB Nintendo made controllers that will be getting this mod when micro graces us with a new batch!

I have been following this thread to try and put an XBox controller joystick into my now tired N64 controllers.

I've already downloaded micros 2.1 code and purchased a USBIsp and some ATTiny24A chips which haven't arrived yet.

The build looks fairly straight forward as Micros done a good job at providing much of the information required in the code.

Glad to hear these have a good chance of a new batch. I've managed to get 2 good original n64 controllers that aren't limp at all yet, but id still love to have some of the GameCube style sticks, so I can preserve the og ones as much as possible on some of the games that get a bit heavy handed

Micro,

I wired up my first ATTiny24A SSU and flashed the EEPRom and HEX files using avrdude and Atmel Studio.
This all worked great  :)

Unfortunately when I set the hfuse and lfuse with what you put in the code it stopped responding.
I can no longer talk to the ATTiny24A.

Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?
So far I have been doing all this without the 10k resistor. What's it for?

I tried the Goldeneye and can confirm the problem is there. Looking forward for a solution.

EDIT: I tried to recalibrate the stick using the method you mentioned earlier (method number one). It didn't work, mostly. The upperleft, upperright, lowerleft and lowerright corners worked fine, but when I tried to move forward I suddenly moved backward and so on. So I reverted back to the original settings. It's not such an issue as other games work perfectly but if it is solvable I would be happy if the problem could be fixed.

So, along with my continued interest in these, i'd like to ask what the official name of the actual joystick piece you send with these is called?  or where i might can order some from.  I'd like to see if they'll fit in gamecube controllers to replace those if they get worn out.  seems like they'd be the same kind. 

I've seen plenty for xbox/playstation controllers, which the small microswitch on it for the L/R3 buttons, but it seems hard to find the same ones that will fit in a gamecube controller.

Just tried my first GC style replacement stick tonight, and while it's good, I can see the drawbacks of the 45 38 degree potentiometer in it. Since I'm already starting down this rabbit hole, I might as well go all the way (and/or get really inspired from all the info here and take a crack at the particulars myself)

I have been trying to build your project using some Xbox 360 Pots. After destroying 5 Attiny24A-SSU, I finally switched to the PU series and was able to get one working.

It seems that for some reason it keeps getting stuck on the calibration step.

I've followed the instructions in your manual on doing the calibration step and it doesn't always work. Not sure what I did different but after countless times of trying to calibrate it finally worked.

I then did a backup of the eeprom by doing the following:

avrdude.exe -c usbasp -p t24 -U eeprom:r:$(ProjectDir)\Release\$(ItemFileName)_EEPRom_Backup.hex:i

I can restore this back by doing a write instead and it works ok. The next problem I seem to be getting is trying to apply a deadzone.

After lots and lots of calibration attempts with a deadzone it will eventually complete calibration but what I get is Up, Down and left all work ok. When I move the stick to the right its ok if I don't go all the way to the right. If I push to far it starts moving left.

Any ideas?

Also I played Goldeneye perfectly ok including aiming. I did however remove the N64 gate and replace it with a section of the Xbox case.

Just let the poor man work out the kinks in the current design/code, as he clearly stated he'll have a go at it when he has the time. 4 months isn't that bad, been waiting for the N64 HDMI-mod for well over 3 years now.

Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know I have a small write-up for modding the existing GC style joystick board with micro's solution, without the need to order a new PCB. The only thing you will need is an ATtiny24, a 10K resistor and some solder skills.

I'm still trying to hold out for these.  I want at least 4 of them, maybe more.  I've got some busted up controllers in need of something good.

Might go ahead and buy the replacement sticks and just wait for these, but is there any ETA at all for a new batch? 

to add:  I recently bought some of the gamecube style replacements from video game museum, and i put one of them in.  so far it seems to do ok.  I dont have any issues spin slashing in zelda.  maybe they're getting better at these.  i'd still like to get some of these boards though, as i like the idea of being able to calibrate them if something gets off.

So besides the issues with things like spin attacks being difficult in OoT, what other major issues did the GC sticks have on their own?  I'll be digging through the thread a bit to see if i can find out what people were saying, but i'd like to do some more testing with these new ones i got which seem to do pretty good overall. 

edit: well i found that controller test rom and did a couple tests with the 2 controllers i modded with the GC sticks from videogamemuseum (ebay).  I think the only issue i can say that comes up in the controller test is that when i rotate the stick around a lot, sometimes it will not reset back to 0 on the x and/or y axis.  more so the y axis, and will sometimes get off by 2-4 (or negative).  Other than that, the controller seems to hit all the proper points when rotating around the outside of the joystick.  No missed or skipped numbers as far as i can tell, and the benchmark made a fairly nice square with both of my joysticks.  I jumped into Ocarina and the quick spins seemed to do just fine.  It'd be neat to see if somehow micro's code has made it to the people making the replacements.

Well, what I can already say is:
- it's red  ;D
- v3 will have larger pads so it will be easier to assemble.
- enabling calibration mode will be easier (no more pinheader)
- the range problems in Perfect Dark's/Goldeneye's aiming mode should be resolved (hopefully)
- older v2.x PCB's can be updated with the new v3 code. Once the v3 batch is gone I'll write a guide on how to update.

I finally got around to installing this, and it works amazing!

The GameCube sticks I ordered on eBay looked nice but were horrible, the diagonal directors would trigger the opposite diagonal in some games. Really unplayable. This board made them fully functional.

I did play Perfect Dark and noticed the aiming was hard, but I thought it was me.

How will these old boards update? That's so awesome!

I want 2-3 more boards when they become available. Would really like to eventually use a real GameCube stick.

I don't really have time to participate in any form of discussion in web forums anymore... it's been years since I last engaged in one other than those I started myself (often because I needed help with a personal project or something like that). I do understand it's not desirable for 'foreigners' to join a board solely because of one topic (specially when it's to buy a product announced in such board) but I want these PCBs so bad...

We all want these really bad :-) And in regards to "foreigner"... Dude seriously :D I suspect there are alot of different nationalities on this forum, e.g. I'm Swedish and I was under the impression that micro was German (apologies if I'm not correct on that one hehe).

The source code is full with German comments, and his name does sound very German as well. So I'd think it's safe to assume he actually is German! Found someone on Facebook with the same name, from Germany, now studying in Sweden (no idea if it's actually the same person though), where we're both from! :) It is a small world.

However, I think he meant "foreigner" as a foreigner to this forum rather than nationality :)

Oh, and I'm also highly interested in the v3 PCB when it's ready. I happened to buy myself a N64 stick replacement without checking online first about the sensitivity issues, got a shock how Perfect Dark was handling - I didn't know if I was a pro at the game when I was 13 or if the sensitivity was off the charts in the replacement. Obviously it was the latter ;)

I've been using your 2.1 code to play around with a gamecube and wii joystick in n64 controller, but I had a question about using a deadzone.  Changing the code so that a deadzone is always created in calibration was pretty simple, but I was wondering how to control the size of the deadzone, like maybe as a percentage of the throw of the stick in the x or y direction.  I wasn't sure how to do that because there is a deadzone variable but I wasn't sure what that value represented in terms of a 84 stepped joystick output.
