Title: Changing the EEPROM?
Post by: Segasonicfan on February 24, 2004, 06:11:49 AM
How do I change/program the EEPROM to play import Sega CD games on my Modded (to play all imports) Genesis 1?  Is it hard to do?  If anyone could link me (or tell me) any info that would be very helpful..thanks!

The EPROM's in the CD system, and it's not swappable on the top-loaders.  Most (if not all) frontloaders had a socketed EPROM you can easily change.  Same for the LaserActive modules, but not for any other CD system I've seen.

just look for a socketed chip with a window on the Top or a sticker over the cemter.

ive never had one, the chip should be socketed, so remove it carefully. if it has a sticker it should have something about a bios on i think, once you have the chip out, buy/build/steal or however you would aquire an EEPROM reader writer.

then dump it into a binary ROM, rn it in a genesis emulator to make sure it works, if it dont, download the bios ROM, then use a ROM header editor to change the region to JUE and it sould work, it worked for me through emulation, but i'd hafta test it first, and get a sega CD, EEPROM reader/writer, and a good chunk of time that has been stolen from me already.

Lawrence, would that work? i can send you a ROM header editor that can change the region if you wanna like test it or sumthing.

hrm.....sounds more complicated than i first hoped, but not too hard.  Do you know where I can find an EEPROM reader to buy?  and do you know how mnuch they cost?  That would be a great help.  I have a broken SegaCD I can fish around in to find the chip.  This mod is definitely worth doing too, since I found a Datel CDX sells for $200+ :o   I have one too, I got it for $15...lol.
