Title: Possible to extend a GBA link cable?
Post by: Shadow_Zero on March 08, 2007, 09:07:21 PM
I'd like to extend my GBA link cable in order to connect my two Gamecube Gameboy Players (my longest cable is 1.8m which isn't long enough).
I've visited an electronic store with one of my see-through cables and they said it's not possible to solder or anything.
I've also tried to daisychain 5 GBA link cables but that didn't work either.
Is there any way to accomplish this?

Not possible to solder? They were probably talking about the connector and not the wiring. If you have a spare link cable, I think it's worth trying to splice the existing cable rather than using brand new wiring with the same connectors. Go halfway down the cable and just cut it there, and then see how many wires you have to deal with. Select an appropriate multi-conductor wire (something thicker than 24 gauge phone wire, probably) and complete each circuit.

It's worth mentioning that while this is physically possible, there may be a limitation to the length of the cable from a hardware standpoint. Ethernet runs can't be more than 100 meters, parallel printer cables can't go more than 25 feet, and USB cables can't be longer than 12 feet. There's no reason to assume that the GBA link can be extended for miles and miles and still operate properly. Some experimentation may be required, and you may have to sacrifice a few cable before you get it right.

Wow, don't know why I never replied to this! But thanks for the extensive answer! Unfortunately I never got around to continue this project. But deja-vu, I totally forgot about this topic here, and after seeing this setup on the Shining Soul forum, https://forums.shiningforcecentral.com/viewtopic.php?p=713452, I got rekindled, and started asking on Reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/Gameboy/comments/uud8j5/looking_for_a_really_long_gba_link_cable/  XD

I know it's REALLY niche, but still, kinda surprised no Chinese manufacturer (or retro hobbyist) produced longer GBA link cables, or an extension cable!
