Title: X2VGA 2 High Definition VGA Transcoder
Post by: qz33 on December 15, 2006, 04:24:54 PM
Okay so I saw this and I was wondering if anyone here knew anything about it.
Site is here (http://www.x2vga.com/).

Now this is not the usual x2vga or the x2vga+.  This apparently works on anything so it is a general transcoder.  Given how well the x2vga+ performed (IMO), I thought this might be worth checking out.

Basically I wanted to try to start a discussion and see what the folks here think

No experience with this one, but I'd be a lot more inclined to use it than the other various transcoders as it actually has the appearance of an appliance. Not a Lego toy. I'll probably pick it up next year.

I really would not recommend this one. The video quality is terrible on my lcd monitor, while it seems passable on my crt. It does offer a bunch of inputs, including component but there was still color bleed with the component inputs.. ugh. It also didn't seem to support progressive (480p was the only one i could test) I got this for around $40, and i guess i got what i paid for.

Ken Gasper offers some transcoders that have been hand built. Some are exclusively for x-box, but he has one that's straight component to vga. prices are $50 - $70, and there is apparently around a four week wait. Everything i've seen online says that the quality is good.

This post offers some schematics for ken gasper's vga transcoder. be sure to read the posts, as it offers fixes and such, as some of the schematics are older. I haven't built it, but i figured the people around here would appreciate it.

I own the X2VGA 2. here's my setup:

Multiple Xboxes + GameCube --> Component Out --> X2VGA 2 --> Mitsubishi MegaView Pro 37 XC-3730c

the one comment i get is how clear everything looks.  mind you, my monitor needs a cap replacement, but over all it is AWESOME.

but....

there are issue with 480i through component....it pretty much forces you to use their stupid "easy view" mode, even if your monitor supports 15khz horizontal.  no emails to tech support have been returned yet.  i'm dying to turn off this "feature" so i can see full screen 480i through component.

also, be aware that there may be issues with LCD displays.

i'm on the mailing list for the next one...but with no response to email from tech support, and no word in almost a year on the next version, things don't look good.

I'm considering the X2VGA 2 to use for my PS2.  I game mostly on the PC, so would like to have everything in my home office gaming wise.  Has anyone been using it for PS2 that could comment on how well it works?

Hey, murder_of_crows

Has it really been a year since they have updated the site with the coming soon banner?
