I know there's several different standardized encodings for Japanese text, including JIS-X-0201, JIS-X-0208, Shift-JIS, and JP-EUC. What encoding is typically used for Japanese text by the PC98? I'm asking because I've figured out how the header of MAG (Makichan v2) image files on the PC98 are encoded, with the part before the image header being just textual metadata (such as author name, and image description). But while some of this text is in English (and is displayable with standard ASCII 1-byte per character), it's typically in Japanese in an encoding that is neither standard Unicode (2-bytes per character) nor is it in UTF8 (variable length characters with 1-byte per character for most English stuff, and multiple bytes per character for other languages). So I assume it probably uses one of the JIS encodings, but I'm not entirely sure. It could possibly use some proprietary PC98 encoding that isn't any kind of official standard. Anybody here know what encoding a PC98 uses for Japanese text?
