When I got my Astro City cabinet I replaced the JAMMA wiring loom with a new one, with a lot of flexibility in the wiring and connectors. It has intermediate connections for joysticks, video and audio, so that I could - depending on what game I was installing - quickly throw in optional cables.
It was therefore easy to switch from mono to stereo, add different controller inputs, including JVS, or even slap a console in there and skip the JAMMA connection entirely.
But this flexibility came at a legibility cost: sometimes it was annoying to try and remember what the hell I'd done, which of the dozen new connectors was which, and so on.
So, cable labels! I could just buy some for pennies each and scrawl some cryptic note on them, or I could get a little fancy and design some new tags and print them out.
