Title: PC-9821 and Windows 95/98
Post by: Dr.Wily on December 07, 2016, 09:32:36 PM
Hello,

Recieved a new PC-9821 (XA16) whith Pentium 166 and 64mo of RAM and an integrated Intel LAN adapter. Unfortunatly, no OPNA, only WSS sound...

I tried to install Windows 98 on this beast, but I find out there a little problem to run the setup. First I can't find a boot disk to launch the setup, OK I make my own boot disk and taken a japanese version of Windows 98. No luck, if I can boot fine, win98's setup program won't run. Setup.exe give nothing when I run it, it back to the prompt.

I notice there is a special version of Windows 98 named "NEC Windows 98", this is a specific version for PC-98 or just a localization ? What the diférence between japanese Windows 98 and "NEC Windows 98".

I also have a Windows 2000 for PC-98, it requiere 4 floppies to boot, but you can only make this floppies with the tools "makeboot" that can be found on the CD.

Some questions :

- does it exist a version of Windows 98 for PC-98 ?
- is it possible to boot directly from CD ?
- Is the setup of windows 98 requiere a special boot disk ?

Thanks !

NEC PC9800 series were not IBM compatible machines. They were their own line of computers, at least to start with. So it stands to reason that you cannot just install a IBM PC version of windows on a PC98 machine.

I do not know about Windows 98, but there certainly are PC98 versions of Windows 95, and such PC98 specific versions of windows is what can be installed on a PC98, not IBM PC versions.

I found Windows 95, 2000 but not the 98...

I successfully installed Windows 95, but not the 2000. Can't boot with this one. And I'm still looking for a Win98 copy....
