Title: Genesis/Megadrive cable component.
Post by: erkan on May 24, 2004, 05:08:05 AM
Hello.

I want to build an RGB cable for my Megadrive 2. But I cant find the plug for the cable that fits into the console. Anyone know where to find it?

Ive been thinking of getting the Megadrive 1 instead if I cant find the plug since the first version seems to use an ordinary Mini-DIN plug (anyone can verify that it uses a Mini-DIN).

The Gen1 uses a DIN8, the Gen2 uses a mini-DIN9.  You should be easily able to get the DIN8 at any electronics store, the mini-9 is gonna have to be ordered, it's not common.

I will probably get a Genesis 1 instead then.

Just to note there are two types of DIN8.
The more common DIN45326 (270 degrees) and the one that Genesis (or at least Mega Drive) uses, DIN41524 (262 degrees).
There's only a small difference on the pin layout and these two are in most cases compatible but if you can choose, take the 262 degrees type.

Thanks for that info!

I'm going to write it down.

Is adding RGB output as simple as creating a cable that can handle it on a Genesis 2 / 32x system?  I would like to create one since my Gen2/CD/32x system has been connected to my Mitubishi HDTV system I haven't been satisfied with the screen picture.  I get black lines inbetween certain colors.  Whites and grey are the only colors that appear solid and I would really like to get this fixed.  PS: its not the cable I've tried several and I've also tried my Genesis 3 and Nomad and they display the same color patterns.

Iirc both the MD1 and MD2 can output RGB natively, you just need to hook it up.
If you're doing a MD1, make sure to factor in a connection to the headphone jack so that you can get stereo sound too, as I believe the normal connector at the back only features mono sound (both channels mixed into one).
Don't bother going anywhere near a Genesis3, for moral reasons more than anything else.
