First, I imported this from Japan and asked Batteries + Bulbs store employee if it's okay to plug a Japanese computer into an American socket and he said that Japan and America's watts are about the same.
Second, after a few minutes, it shut itself off. As soon as I turned it on again, it turned off immediately. The PSU started making a funny sizzling sound.
Third, I have been asking as many people and researched as much as possible, but little to no luck. Some said that this voltage converter will fix the problem:

But one said that this one will work:

I am also seeking a way to digitally record from the FM TOWNS to a Windows PC like a Surface Pro 2. Any suggestions?
i have a very similar issue. when i received mine, i boot the computer then shut down by itself after 3-4 sec. Plugged to the wall make a strange pitch noise. Result: I opened the fm towns case, remove the power supply, verify power supply components, i can clearly see 2 cap leakings. Remove all Caps on the power supply and solder new ones. It's working now :)
So verify if any of your caps on the power supply is leaking or if the top of one of them is bulbed.
I took it to a repair shop and they said it is best to find a working PSU by TDK CA02951-0620.
Any site suggestions?
