Title: XVI and Gradius: Music Problems
Post by: efs on April 19, 2013, 09:52:26 AM
Hi there. Just a minor concern here.

I have a X68000 XVI which also happened to come with a free floppy of Gradius. The game plays perfectly on the 10 MHz setting, but whenever I play it with the system turned to 16 MHz, the FM sound is glitched. Some instruments or channels sound to be either too high or too low an octave, and are frequently out of tune, and the pitches always change every time I perform a hard reset. To my knowledge, (don't have a keyboard yet) the rest of the game functions properly.

Is this a known problem with the X68k version of Gradius? It'd seem logical, since it's one of the earliest games developed for the system and it only makes sense that it wouldn't have been programmed with a faster processor in mind, but in all honesty I have no clue.

There are a lot of games that dont run right on 16mhz.  I know Fantasy Zone and Naious have sound problems on 16mhz.

It must have something to do with the way they programmed sound timing.  Some games must tie it to the cpu speed.
