Title: Gamecube - Best Possible Imagequality (quality/moneywise)

There are a lot of gamecubegames i've been wanting to play - what would give me the best possible imagequality at a decent price? (I have a Qoob Pro on order so region doesn't matter).

Displaydevice => Sanyo PLV-Z4 - 720p projector with RGB/Component/VGA-in. Not the best displaydevice but this is what i have.

Options

Pure RGB- might have to split sync but it seems quite easy

Bit more expensive but very doable.

RGB with a more proffesional device XRGB3? Very expensive, is it worth buying?


And the lost option - Component gamecube cables - quite expensive and not usable with other consoles


What would ppl here advice me to use in this case?

i use a modded wii with component video for gamecube games, then via a hd pro box upscanner, i have not tried this on my xrgb2 plus yet though ( in my other room, with my sfc, pce and ps1)

apparently, a native gc with the super expensive component cable is slightly better ( slightly clearer, less digital artifacts, but the cable is not worth US$70/GBP50.

With a bit of luck you can find a second hand wii for about the same price as the gc component cable and get acceptable 480p.

But if you want to go original and 480p, that infamous cable is absolutely worth it quality wise. Be sure that you have a cube with the digital out port though!

I'd say you have a couple of options here:

PAL cube > RGB SCART > Sync Splitter > VGA Upscaler > TV

I'd definitely use a VGA upscaler in this case as a modern TV will handle 480p VGA much better than 15k RGB. The CGA to VGA boards available on eBay are apparently pretty good for the price but I haven't yet tried one myself (got one on order now). This is the cheapest option I'd say, but unfortunately it won't give you native 480p on games that support it.

NTSC cube > Component cable > TV

This is the more expensive option, as the component cables are going for £75 upwards now. You do have the choice of modding the cable for VGA if you want. This will give you support for native 480p on games that offer it.

I'm not using a modchip so my own solution is both of the above with a region switch modded JP cube for NTSC. I'm going to try a scan line generator as well with the upscaled PAL console.

but pal games are really compromised in terms of speed and large borders

I run my gamecube with a D Terminal Cable into a Micomsoft XSELECT-D4 box that outputs VGA into a CRT monitor.

it's gorgous, still, I'd love to find someone who could take the digital signal out of the box and convert it to VGA without having to convert to analog Component first. There is potential for loss in signal. At least the set up I have now converts it to RGB so that the monitor isn't trying to do the conversion itself.

The best way to get VGA is to modify an official Nintendo component video cable as shown here (http://gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id=av:gamecube_rgb).

The chip in the component video cable is also capable of converting the digital video from the Gamecube into 480p RGB as well as component video. This mod takes advantage of that capability. Those cables are expensive though so try not to fuck up the soldering!  ;)

the real question is: Could you convert the internal digital signal to something standard like a TMDS protocol that could be used with a DVI, HDMI, or DisplayPort cable without ever converting to analog?

I have the spliced together RGB SCART cable on a US GC. It takes the colour from the DV out port and the sync and sound from the multi-out then joins them all together at the SCART end. As RGB is better quality than Component, why don't you consider doing something similar?

Decided to get a Wii after the Wii-U launch and go with component 480p!

I have enough snes games (and diablo 3) to amuse me  with :)

I've only recently played around with my Cube games on the Wii and I find the results disappointing. Things just appear noticeably blurry, way blurrier than normal on the Cube. Even at 480p. I guess the Cube will still have its use for a while.
