Title: Power supply trouble
Post by: NFG on July 20, 2010, 09:34:15 PM
I've got a problem with my XVI.  I replaced the power supply with a nice ATX unit, and now all the metal bits of the system tingle when it's powered up, and all cables connected to other devices spark when the two grounds touch.  Everything seems to work just fine, but obviously this is not a normal or good thing.

I checked the power supply wiring and there are no shorts.  When the power supply is ON but the soft-power switch is OFF, there's no tingling...  As soon as the system switches on using the front switch, there's bad voltage running through the ground rail.

EDIT: Just checked with a multimeter: 123V AC between monitor ground and XVI ground.

Unplug the power cable and check that the earth line is connected. I once found one with no earth wire at all, even though there was an earth pin on each end.

Yeah, there's no earth line.  Japan doesn't use one, and I kept the original X68 power cord.  I reckon I'll have to replace it with a thick proper cable with 3 wires.  =/

Replaced the power cord and all is fine again.  Now, where's my monitor?
