Title: Laptop screen as a standalone monitor?
Post by: qz33 on January 03, 2008, 01:56:54 PM
Since the people here are so inclined about similar subjects, I was wondering if anyone here has ever tried to use a laptop screen as a standalone monitor? If you did, what all was involved? Something tells me this would either be extremely easy or extremely complex.

If so did anyone try it with any consoles (probably just HD ones)? I think the dpi of a 1900X1200 17" screen would look fantastic for gaming, at least for still shots. Also it might could be used for a projector!

I'm sure someone is going to dislike this post. :o :P

To use most laptop screens, you need a digital encoder to process composite or RGB video. Bought singly, that chip will cost you about $300 or more. Unless already have a spare encoder chip, or you plan on recycling several thousand LCD panels in this way, it's always more cost-effective for you to buy a dedicated unit that's already got an encoder in it.

Has anyone here tried it?  I really would love to get some more information about this.
