Title: SNES chroma encoder
Post by: Orkie on June 02, 2007, 01:11:51 AM
Hi,

I have a broken PAL SNES with a chip labelled as follows on the board:
S-ENC B
BA6594AF
309 159

Is it feasible to use this to convert from RGB+sync to composite? I can't find any datasheets/pinouts for the chip anywhere and was wondering if anybody had one.

Lawrence tells me it's probably not the best option, and I know there are lots of circuits around using Sony CXA parts to do the job but I'm a bit loathed to destroy a working PlayStation to get hold of one when I have this dead SNES (snapped a pin clean off a PPU when doing the 50/60Hz mod) lying around anyway :D.

Thanks

PS: Thanks to Lawrence for activating my account. You were right, the e-mail had been caught by the SPAM filter.

Sorry to be a pain... I've opened up a PSX (model SCPH-7502, mainboard PU-22) to see if there is a CXA chip in there, but I can't see one. Does this version simply not have one or am I looking in the wrong place/not carefully enough?

only models # 1001, 5001 & 5501 have them, you also have to build a color subcarrier or else the picture will only be in black and white.

Most PS1s do not have a normal CXA video encoder, only the first gen models.

Ah, I see. I'll have to try and pick up an old PlayStation at some point or find the chip on it's own then. Thanks.
