Title: Any mods available for 4 button PC gameport pads?
Post by: chaoticjelly on January 14, 2007, 03:29:40 PM
I have a few of these:

I was wondering if there are any mods out there to make them work with systems / what uses are there for these pads? I think gameport connection is obsolete now..

Can I hack them up into anything good?

You can hack any controller for any purpose. PC controllers of this variety are good substitutions for traditional Atari 2600/7800 controllers. Please see part 2 of Lawrence's controller primer here:

Hey Kendrick,

I read all of that already, but not much of it went in.. how specifically would it apply to this pad i.e. what exactly would I need to do?  :D

Thanks a lot in advance..

Every button is a switch. From the circuit board in the controller you wish to modify, you can attach additional wiring to connect these switches to another encoder. In the case of game systems that accept unencoded input (like the Master System, the Neo Geo and the Atari 2600/7800) you can simply wire the switches directly to contacts on the controller port.

Your PC controller may or may not have an encoder which needs to be removed. Traditional IBM PC gameports expect analog joystick input, and when only a digital pad is present there may be resistors present to simulate the extreme positions of the two potentiometers that are usually used.
