is this possible in any way? i figure all these dpads are kinda similar so i imagine its possible. my psp is fully dissected ready for some form of dpad improvement but i have no saturn pad to try this mod on atm.
You might want to have a look at your equipment before you ask these questions. Installing a saturn D-pad would probably not work for several reasons, not least that you'd have to carve a massive great circle into your PSP shell.
you can improve the psp dpad by cutting a + shaped piece of plastic (plastic from one of those cheapass binders, or from a black nes cart cover) and putting it under the dpad, on top of the rubber plungers
ok ok i know it sounds like its a dumb question and i'm an idiot but gimme a chance lol.
ok going from the psp mobo up- theres this thin plastic (looks like the stuff they used in ps controllers) then a rubber pad, on top of that goes the actual plastic d-pad you pur your thumbs on.
i just want to replace the d-dpad you put ur thumbs on. like the capcom psp d-pad (http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/images/psppad-thumb.jpg) but instead of being on top of my psp i want it inside. i picked the saturn d-pad because people in the fighting game community usually praise it. if it matters they made a saturn pad for psx so maybe it'll be a little more similar?
seems feasible in my mind i jsut hope somebody can see what i'm saying lol.

I see what you're saying.
There's 2 problems that I see right off.
1. All d-pads aren't created equal. There's variances in diameter, depth, contact design, and even basic mounting technique. You can't just swap one cap in place of another.
I don't own a PSP or either revision of the Saturn pad, but I seriously doubt it's even a remotely close match.
2. The high praise the Saturn d-pad gets has as much, if not mroe, to do with the components under it as it does the actual cap. A d-pad isn't just the plastic button on the top.
Even if you DO manage to get the Saturn button cap into a PSP, you won't get the high-quality input of a Saturn pad, because it's still not a Saturn pad.
ok well just messing around with spare psx pads. the dpad almost fits. the arrows are the same size but the plastic at the bottom is just a tad bigger. i'm gonna whip out the sandpaper and see if i cant amke some magic.
