Title: Dreamcast Power Issues
Post by: Vorde on January 14, 2006, 09:44:37 AM
OK, here's the deal...
I bought a used Dreamcast about a year ago. It worked great and I was [being an idiot --Lawrence]

Anyways, I went on a trip to another country where there A/C voltage is different, and being the stupid dumbfuck I was, I brought my DC along with me.
The voltage rating on the DC is 110v and the plug I put it into was 220v. Now the power supply exploded, eventhough the rest of the system was fine.

I bought a replacement power supply off of Lik-Sang.com and it's made by MadCow. It's black/blue and has the ability to handle multiple voltages. Anyways, it worked fine for a long time now and all of a sudden my dreamcast died. I checked to see what was wrong and I didn't see anything wrong with it.

The next day my dreamcast worked    I was confused as hell. How does a system die, come back to life, and then die again...
My dreamcast currently doesn't work and I was wondering wtf it could be.

P.S. It's not the fuse because I checked it and it's fine...

[Yes, I edited this post.  It contained stupid statements that degraded the value of the rest of the post.  It was that or delete it all.  --Lawrence]

Clean the sodding pins where the PSU joins onto the board.

INSIDE, NOT ON THE BACK OF THE MACHINE.

I will try this right now and let you know if it makes a difference. Thanx for the suggestion!

lol, it worked. I cleaned the pins on the power supply going to the board. I also cleaned where the contacts touch on the inside of the power supply. I also bent the pins a little which seemed to help. Thanx a lot for making me realize that I should do those things first before bitching about it. Thanx!

Heh no worries, it's just that's the most common thing that goes wrong with a Dreamcast not powering up.
I'm not entirely sure, but I think the PSU inside a Dreamcast is one that switches modes to take all types of mains power. You may need to check that before taking my word for it though.

lol, yeah it is. it's the power supply unit from lik-sang. the one where I can take it anywhere and not have to worry about power. I also found out that for some reason if I take the video cord out of the back and put it back in it seems to help...

I'm guessing it might have to do with the videochip or something.

Anyways, I want to do a VGA mod to my Dreamcast but I'm not 100% sure I should do it. I have a old monitor up in my bedroom that I want to use...

How much better is it playing it on VGA than a TV set? Thanx!
