Title: Atari 2600 S-Video mod....
Post by: RobIvy64 on November 16, 2004, 03:06:21 AM
Hola! I am trying to figure out how to mod my 2600 so I can enjoy S-Video quality. Ive seen diagrams where people convert the S-Video signal to composite...but I want just S-Video. Thanks in advance!

S-video should provide pixelicious gaming ;)

Well, if you have diagrams that taps S-video from the motherboard and converts it to composite, then you have the diagram to tap S-video from the mobo. Whats the problem?

Also, I can't help but snicker @ a S-Video mod for a 2600. Sorry!

I'm not sure that the 2600 even generates signals that even close to s-video. You might end up simply re-encoding the existing composite signal into s-video, which won't get you any better quality.

That said, I am not up on the 2600's video encoding hardware!

perhaps, Mr. Ivy, if you were to show us the diagram in question we might be able to offer suggestions?

Perhaps this is a more concise explanation (http://www.atariage.com/2600/faq/index.html?SystemID=2600#composite), specifically for the 2600? The same site has more information on a 7800 s-video mod which is probably more worthwhile just because it can play both 7800 and 2600 games. And heck yeah it's worth doing! It's every bit as worth it as an N64 mod for RGB. :)

Nice, the 2600 *IS* as backward as I thought it was! Seems odd that the unit generates the chroma for you, but requires an external DAC to do the luma. I guess I shouldn't really be surprised given the age of the design.

Glad you got a solution to your problem that isn't backward.
