I've never had any problems with saving to my memory card for PS1 before.
I'm playing Final Fantasy 8 and now when i try to save, it says "failed to check memory card." Most of the time, it will eventually save after minutes of trying to do so. I am using a game shark with codes, could this be the problem?
I have plenty of open blocks as well.

Do the pins on your memory card need cleaned? Is there any erosion / corrosion on them? Did you leave it in the sun or perhaps the freezer? Hey, it happens! Have you tried the alternate slot? Have you tried an alternate card? Have you tried an alternate playstation? Are you really sure you want to play FF8?

All good questions, but knowing if it's an official card or not is the most important thing. If it's third party, he's screwed.
