SNES - popping sound, flashed white lines

Bought used one yesterday w Super mario World.  While playing, popping sound through speakers and quick white lines or sometimes several flash on the screen.  Is this a cleaning issue or something more serious ?  The game seems a little looser in the slot than I remember from having one before.  There is more front to back play, it seems.
