It seems that a lot of these keyboards suffer from broken or peeling off insulation.
I made my own insulation of black SUGRU and I hope my keyboard will now last longer ;)
Sugru is play dough alike compund that will turn into rubber after left for 24h in room temperature.

This gave me a thought. How about trying something like this:

NEW Apple IIgs MAC Cable Mini-Din8M to 8 open wires, 8' (2.4m)

The keyboard has Mini-Din7M but the previously mentioned cable has Mini-Din8M connector. However, judging by the differences, one pin needs to be removed from the connector to make it compatible.

Neat Idea, probably easier to use if cable goes into a recess than insulation tape or self amalgamating tape (that may not be spelled correctly)  ::)

Though could replace altogether, think this is the right plug, I stress the think!

Then just use a suitable wire, sure I seen coiled like the type used on keyboards somewhere, either cpc or maybe rs.

Yes, that's the one. I agree that my first proposal was not very good. How about this ?

8 Pin Line Microphone Cable Extended 2 - 3.5 FT

HAM radio microphone cords/cables look like ideal candidates for the job.

FWIW, I use a PS/2 keyboard extension cord for my truekey. I drilled out the center of the plug to allow for the extra pin on the x68000 keyboard. This method will not allow you to use the mouse plugged into the keyboard.
