Title: Paint Job
Post by: htimreimer on September 16, 2011, 05:35:07 AM
Is there any way to do a paint restoration on a NES or a model 2 Genesis  or a Magnavox Odyssey²

Thanks

You want to restore the painted details, like the logos and text? That requires a stencil and new paint. You can't really store paint that's rubbed off or faded, you have to add new paint in those cases.

If you're talking about the color of the plastic, that's a different matter entirely. Plastic has dye embedded into it, using acetone and other solvents. When plastic oxidizes, you get the yellowing or browning effect that's observed in the lighter colors. In the toy restoration business, they use a solution of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and dip individual plastic pieces in it so remove the oxidized layer and restore it to its original bright 1980s shine. Keep in mind that this isn't a paint job so much as it is chemically scraping off the outer layer, like a clay bar on a car.
