Albx whipped up a few floppies for me, since I was unable to sort out the proper hardware config in a reasonable amount of time, and one of the discs he sent - a 3.5" 1.2MB Human68k OS boot disc, works great!

The XVI compact that's been lying around idle for a long time boots just fine with his disk, albeit a little slowly.  Yay!!

Now to check out the proper XVI and see if the floppy drivers he sent will allow me to use the 3.5" drives as well as the 5.25"...

Well I tried again with the same result.  With the floppy cable attached to the external 3.5" drive the XVI won't boot at all, it just sits and waits for me to unplug the drive (regardless of the drive's power on/off status).  I'm going to have to blame the cable at this time, and when I get a chance I'm gonna investigate the wiring.  It seemed fine the last six times I checked, but obviously I don't know WTF I'm doing.  =/
